A Solid body can be balanced by supporting it at centre of gravity.

Centre of Gravity Class 10 ICSE Physics Notes Chapter-1 Force

Centre of Gravity: The centre of gravity of a body is the point about which algebraic sum of moment of weight of all particle constituting the body is zero.

Position of Centre of Gravity

Position of Centre of Gravity depend on its shape and distribution of mass.

Position of Centre of Gravity Change as Shape Change

the centre of gravity of a uniform wire is at its mid-point. But if this wire is bent into the form of a circle its centre of gravity will then be at the centre of circle

Centre of Gravity Lies Outside the Body.

In case of a ring, it is situated at the centre of that circle. But the material is only along the circumference.

Centre of Gravity of Regular Body

  • Uniform Rod: The centre of gravity is at the midpoint of the rod.
  • Circular Disc: The centre of gravity is at the centre of the disc.
  • Parallelogram Lamina: The centre of gravity is at the point of intersection of the two diagonals.
  • Hollow Cone: The centre of gravity is at a height of one-third of its total height above the base.

  • Cube: The center of gravity is at the midpoint of the line joining the centers of opposite sides.
  • Sphere: The center of gravity is at the center of the sphere.
  • Triangle: The center of gravity is at the intersection of the medians (lines from each vertex to the midpoint of the opposite side).
  • Rectangle: The center of gravity is at the intersection of the diagonals.

Balance point

A Solid body can be balanced by supporting it at centre of gravity.

Determination of Centre of Gravity of Irregular Body

  1. Suspend the body: Hang the irregular body from one of the holes, allowing it to swing freely.
  2. Draw a vertical line: Let the plumb line settle, then draw a vertical line along the string on the body.
  3. Repeat for other holes: Repeat the process by suspending the body from each of the remaining holes, drawing a vertical line each time.
  4. Find the intersection: The point where all the vertical lines intersect is the centre of gravity (CG) of the irregular body.
