Que-39: Calculate the magnetic field in which the cyclotron dees should be placed to accelerate protons. The applied frequency is 8 megacycles/second. Take proton mass 1.67 x 10^-27 kg.

Ans: F = qB / 2πm

=> 8 x 10^6 = 1.6 x 10^-19 x B / 2 x 3.14 x 1.67 x 10^-27

=> B = 8 x 10^6 x 2 x 3.14 x 1.67 x 10^-27 / 1.6 x 10^-19

=> 0.524 T

Que-40: A cyclotron accelerating protons has dees of 0.4 m radius and a radio-frequency supply of 12 megacycles/second at 5000 volt maximum value. Calculate the magnitude of the required magnetic field, the energy and velocity acquired by the protons. Take proton mass 1.67 x 10-27 kg.

Ans:  F = qB / 2πm

B = 2πfm / q

=> 2 x 3.14 x 12 x 10^6 x 1.67 x 10^-27 / 1.6 x 10^-19

=> 0.786 T

again K = q²B²R² / 2m

=> (1.6 x 10^-19)² x (0.786)² x (0.4)² / 2 x 1.67 x 10^-27

=> 0.07576 x 10^-11 J

Ans in MeV

=> 0.07576 x 10^-11 / 1.6 x 10^-13

=> 4.73 MeV
