Numericals on Deviation by a Thin Prism
Class-12 Nootan ISC Physics Ch-17 Refraction and Dispersion of Light through a Prism.
Que-14: A thin prism of refracting angle 10° produces a deviation of 5° in a ray of light passing through it. Find the refractive index of the prism material and the velocity of light in it.
Ans- δm – (μ-1)A {for thin prism}
=> 5° = (μ-1)10
=> (μ-1) = 0.5
=> μ = 1.5
∴ v = c/μ
=> 3 x 10^8 / 1.5
=> 2 x 10^8 m/s
Que-15: A ‘thin’ prism of glass placed in air produces a deviation of 4° in a light ray. If the prism be placed in water, what would be the new deviation?
Ans- δm – (μ-1)A
=> μ° = (1.5 – 1) A
=> A = 8°
again refractive index in water
=> 1.5 x 3/4
∴ δm = (4.5/4 -1) = 1°
