Que-9: Two large, thin metal plates are placed parallel and close to each other. Their inner faces have equal and opposite charges with a surface charge density of 17.0 x 10^-12 C m^-2. What are the magnitudes of electric fields to the left of the plates, to the right of the plates and in between the plates?

Ans-9:
Que-9. Two large, thin metal plates are placed parallel and close to each other. Their inner faces have equal and opposite charges with a surface charge density of 17.0 x 10^-12 C m^-2. What are the magnitudes of electric fields to the left of the plates, to the right of the plates and in between the plates?
Out side the plates direction of electric fields E = 0

due to both plates will be equal and opposite.

Therefore net field will be zero.

Inside the plate direction of electric fields due to both the plates will be same , therefore
Net E.F. = (σ/2ε0) + (σ/2ε0) = (σ/ε0)

= (1.7 x 10‾¹²)/(8.85 x 10‾¹²)

= 2.0 N/C.

Que-10: Two large metal plates of area 1.0 m² face each other. They are 5.0 cm apart and have equal but opposite charges on their inner surfaces. If the electric field between the plates, ignoring edge effects, is 55 N/C, find the charges on the plates.

Ans-10: Electric field between two equally and oppositely charged plates

= σ/ε0 = 55 N/C

σ = q/A = ε0 x 55 N/C = 8.85 x 10‾¹² x 55

q = 1 x 8.85 x 10‾¹² x 55 C

q = 486.75 x 10‾¹² C = 4.9 x 10^-10 C.
