(i) Define the following terms:

(a) Soil Fertility–

Ans:-  Soil fertility refers to the ability of soil to sustain agricultural plant growth, i.e. to provide plant habitat and result in sustained and consistent yields

(b) Soil conservation–

Ans:– Soil conservation is the prevention of loss of the topmost layer of the soil from erosion or prevention of reduced fertility caused by over usage,

(ii) With reference to soil erosion in India answer the following questions.

(a) State any two human activities that have led to soil erosion in India.

Ans– Soil erosion is caused due to human activities  like deforestation, overgrazing, construction and mining.

(b) Mention any two agricultural techniques that can help to prevent soil erosion.

Ans:– Two ways to prevent soil erosion are:

Shelter belts: Trees should be planted in several rows to check the speed of the wind. This reduces soil erosion because of wind.

Constructing dams: Because the rivers cause soil pollution, dams are built in the upper course of the rivers to check soil erosion

(iii) With reference to Red Soil, answer the following:

(a) How is it formed?—

Ans:- Red Soil is formed by the weathering of igneous rocks like granite and metamorphic rocks like gneiss.

(b) Why is it good for Dry Farming?

Ans-  did not get water lodge

(c) Name any two areas where it is found.

Ans :– Goa, Karnataka

(iv) Give a reason for the following statements:

(a) Black Soil has self-ploughing property

Ans .– due to moisture retentive property

(b) Laterite Soil is not suitable for cultivation.

Ans:  Laterite soil is not suitable for cultivation because it is acidic in nature and does not retain moisture.

(c) Alluvial soil is the most fertile soil-

Ans:– It is extremely fertile because it is formed by the sediments transported by rivers and is a mixture of sand, clay and silt. It has a loamy texture and it is rich in humus. It has good water retention and water absorbing capacity
