(i) Mention two advantages of using waterways.
Ans: – It is comparatively less expensive that the rail and road transport. It is good for carrying heavy goods. Water transportation is used in defence in the form Navy. An important role is played by the water transport in foreign trades
(ii) What is the importance of the Golden Quadrilateral?
Ans: – The Golden Quadrilateral is a national highway network connecting most of the major industrial, agricultural and cultural centres of India. The main objective of these super highways is to reduce the distance and travel time between the four mega cities of India
(iii) Mention three disadvantages of roadways.
Ans: –
- The ever rising prices of petrol and diesel have made road transport a rather expensive affair.
- Roads are unsuitable for transport of bulky goods across the country. Railways are preferred for this.
- Roads require maintenance which is unfortunately a widely ignored issue in India.
(iv) Give a reason for the following:
(a) Railways are well developed in the northern states of India.
Ans: – The North Indian flat, with its level ground, dense population, and abundant farmland, helped in railway growth
(b) Sea transport has lost its popularity in recent times.
Ans: – Water transport is a very slow means of transport as compared to land transport. In India there is always a chance of failure of monsoon which may result into a fall of water level in the rivers making navigation difficult whereas, land transport does not face any such seasonal difficulties
(c) Helicopter services are crucial during emergencies.
Ans: – With their ability to quickly reach remote areas, helicopter ambulances can make the difference between life and death in emergency medical situations. They are also equipped with advanced medical equipment and trained medical personnel who can provide lifesaving interventions during transport
