(i) What is the impact for waste generation on the following?
(a) Surface water
Ans: – Human activities that generate domestic sewage and toxic waste cause water pollution by contaminating water with disease-causing microorganisms and poisonous substances
(b) Landscape.
Ans: – Accumulation of these wastes can cause land pollution, degradation of landscape, soil contamination, air pollution, water pollution, health issues, and even the extinction of terrestrial and aquatic species
(ii) Why is dumping considered a harmful method of waste disposal? (Two points.)
Ans: – wastes are illegally dumped into rivers and canals or used to fill land depressions without proper consultations. These practices cause a lot of problems in the long run. These can range from the degradation of the soil quality to leaching toxic chemicals into underground water sources.
