Exercise- 6B Energy Flow and its Importance
page -148
Short Answer :
Q1- What is the source of energy for all ecosystems?
Ans- The source of energy for all ecosystems is the Sun.
Q2- State the importance of green plants in an ecosystem.
Ans- Green plant absorb most of the energy falling on them and by the process of photosynthesis they produce food for the consumers. Plants, being primary producers are of great importance in the ecosystem. They also maintain the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide on earth.
Q3- Differentiate between the producers and consumers.
Ans- Producer like plants and some bacteria are capable of producing its own food using the energy of sun but consumers are not capable of producing their own food. They depend on producers for food.
Q4- State the functions of decomposers in an ecosystem.
Ans- The role of a decomposer is to break down dead organisms and then feed on them. The nutrients created by the dead organisms are returned to the soil to be later used by the producers. Once these deceased organisms are returned to the soil, they are used as food by bacteria and fungi by transforming the complex organic materials into simpler nutrients. The simpler products can then be used by producers to restart the cycle. These decomposers play an important role in every ecosystem.
Q5- What are primary, secondary and tertiary consumers? Explain briefly by giving examples.
Ans- Primary consumers are those that consume the primary producers (plants). For example- rabbits consume grass.
Secondary consumers are those that consume the primary consumers (herbivores). For example- Snakes that consumes rabbit. Tertiary consumers are those that eats the secondary consumers (large predators). For example, owls that eat snakes.
Secondary consumers are those that consume the primary consumers (herbivores). For example- Snakes that consumes rabbit. Tertiary consumers are those that eats the secondary consumers (large predators). For example, owls that eat snakes.
Q6- The energy transfer in an ecosystem is not 100% efficient. Why?
Ans- Any energy transfer in an ecosystem is not 100% because energy is lost to the surroundings in the form of heat, friction losses during the transfer of energy. Therefore complete energy is not transferred.
