Question 2:
The executive power of the Indian Union is vested in the President of India. In this context, answer the following questions:
(i) Give any two reasons for the indirect election of the President.
(ii) Mention any two discretionary powers of the President.
(iii) Mention any three legislative powers of the President
(iv) Name the three kinds of emergencies that can be proclaimed by the President
Answer :
(i) If the President would have been elected directly by the people, he may have become a rival centre of power to the Council of Ministers. Thus, the President is elected indirectly.
(ii ) The President has to be informed of all important decision and deliberations of the Council of Ministers and the Prime Minister is bound to provide whatever information the President seeks.
The President cannot dismiss the Prime Minister in a Parliamentary System, as long as he enjoys a majority.
(iii) The Legislative powers of the President include: (1) Summoning the Houses of Parliament in normal circumstances; (2) Dissolving the Lower House and summoning a joint session of both the Houses in case of deadlock between the two on a particular bill; (3) Addressing first session of the both Houses of Parliament
(iv) The President can declare three types of emergencies — national, state and financial emergency in a state

The Supreme Court is the head of the entire system of judiciary. In this context, answer the following questions:
(i) Mention any two qualifications required by a person to be the judge of the Supreme Court.
(ii) Who appoints the judges of the Supreme Court? What is their term of office?
(iii) Mention any three cases which come under the Original Jurisdiction of the Supreme Court.
(iv) Why is the Supreme Court called the Court of Record?
Answer :
(i) In order to be appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court, a person must be a citizen of India and must have been, for atleast five years, a Judge of a High Court or of two or more such Courts in succession, or an Advocate of a High Court or of two or more such Courts in succession for at least 10 years
(ii) The Chief Justice of India and the Judges of the Supreme Court are appointed by the President under clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution. CHIEF JUSTICE OF INDIA : 2. Appointment to the office of the Chief Justice of India should be of the seniormost Judge of the Supreme Court considered fit to hold the office.
(iii)
- Dispute between the Government of India and one or more States; or.
- Dispute between the Government of India and any State or States on one side and one or more other States on the other; or.
- Dispute between two or more States
(iv) The supreme court is a court of record. In Indian constitution article 129 makes the Supreme Court the ‘court of record”.
Article 129 says- Supreme Court to be a court of record. -The Supreme Court shall be a court of record and shall have all the powers of such a court including the power to punish for contempt of itself. As it is an advisory court it hears matters which are referred under constitution by President of India.

(i) Name the two alliances formed in Europe during the First World War.

(i) By 1914, Europe’s six major powers were split into two alliances that would form the warring sides in World War I. Britain, France, and Russia formed the Triple Entente, while Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy joined in the Triple Alliance
(ii) A dictatorship is a form of government characterized by a single leader (dictator) or group of leaders that hold government power promised to the people
(iii) the Sarajevo Crisis. –The Sarajevo incident refers to the events surrounding the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife Archduchess Sophie during a state visit to Sarajevo on 28 June 1914. It is traditionally regarded as the immediate catalyst for the First World War.
(iv) three ways in which the Treaty of Versailles benefited France–
