Home Science Paper 1 (Theory)
Time Allowed: Three hours
(Candidates are allowed additional 15 minutes for only reading the paper. They must NOT start writing during this time).
Answer all questions from Section A, Section B and Section C.
Section A consists of objective / very short answer questions.
Section B consists of short answer questions.
Section C consists of long answer questions

Question 2:
(i) State any two reasons for cooking food.
(ii) List any two principles of cooking.
Answer:
(i)
- Cooking makes food easier to eat.
- It makes food more appetizing and palatable.
- It makes food easier to digest.
(ii) To cook successfully you must first understand the ways in which heat is transferred: conduction, convection and radiation. You should also understand what the application of heat does to the proteins, sugars, starches, water and fats in food.

(i) Mention any two objectives of meal planning.
(ii) Neetu has recently begun a cabbage soup diet. Define the eating pattern followed by her.
Answer:

- LEARN PORTION CONTROL – Planning your own meals will allow you to see how much you’re actually eating.
- EAT HEALTHY – When you’re hungry and your blood sugar drops, you’re more inclined to eat whatever you can get the fastest.
(ii) Proponents of the diet say that it can help you lose up to 10 pounds (4.5 kg) in a single week, but many health experts warn that the diet is unhealthy and its results unsustainable

(i) When an egg is boiled, some changes take place. Enlist any two changes.
(ii) List two criteria to be kept in mind while planning meals for pre-schoolers.
Answer:
(i) The chemical composition of a boiled egg is different from that of a raw egg. Heat causes denaturation of protein chains, converting egg into a solid mass which can not be converted back into its solid form. Therefore, it is a type of chemical change.
(ii) Three points to be kept in mind while planning a diet for a pre-school child are :
- Meals should be served at regular intervals in a pleasant way.
- Pre-schoolers enjoy colorful meals and that should be taken care of.
- Favorite foods should not be served too often at the cost of nutrients.

(i) Mention any two disadvantages of online banking.
(ii) List any two features of fixed deposit account in a post office.
Answer:

- No Cashless Deposit Option. There is no provision for cash deposits.
- Internet Requirement. Your access to Internet banking services can be hindered in the absence of a stable internet connection.
(ii) The features of post office fixed deposit are:
- Flexibility: The minimum amount for opening a Post Office Fixed Deposit account is Rs.
- Interest: In addition to return, you also earn interest during the maturity period.
Question 6:
State any four ways in which an advertisement can mislead the consumers.
Answer:
- A false claim or impression about the details of a good or service. For example, a product is a different colour to an ad
- Misrepresenting the price. For example, advertising a product at sale price when it is not on sale
- Misrepresenting your consumer rights. For example, saying your consumer rights do not apply when you buy during a sale
- Come up with an Advertising Message that is Hard to Ignore.

Explain any four advantages of consumer education.
Answer: Customer education helps to inspire customer loyalty by building trust. As you educate your customers, they find new and better ways to use your product. They’ll know which features to use and how to use them. They learn tips, tricks, and best practices that provide them more value.
Advantages of consumer education:
• To develop the ability to decide and choose things intelligently.
• To always demand safe, reliable and good quality products at a reasonable price.
• To make consumer alert, well informed and vigilant against corrupt practices in the market.
• To take suitable action when faced with a problem.

(i) State any two ways of sensitising children towards taking care of the elderly.
(ii) Mention any two psychological changes that occur during old age.

Short-term memory shows noticeable changes with age, but long-term memory declines less with age. Some changes in cognition are normal with age, such as slower reaction times and reduced problem-solving abilities.
Question 8: Explain the technique adopted for making a Kantha shawl.
Answer: Kantha also spelled kanta, and qanta, is a type of embroidery craft in the Bangladesh and eastern regions of India, particularly in the Indian states of West Bengal, Tripura and Odisha. Traditionally, Kanthas were made from worn out white saris (loose garments), layered then stitched together. It would take about 7 saris to construct one kantha. There are many different types of Kanthas, but Traditionally Kanthas were a combination of embroidery and quilting.

Briefly describe the motifs and the embroidery on Kashidar purses.
Answer: A popular motif on the original Kashmir shawl is the buteh, or tear-drop shaped motif. These can be very simple, or highly ornate. It is this motif, which may have originated in Iran, that was also copied by Scottish weavers and became widely known as the Paisley motif. Zalakdozi- a form of Kashmir embroidery where tiny delicate chain stitch is used to render the stylized paisley motif, a favorite for this art form.
