Answer the following questions briefly.

Question 2:

Mention two Constitutional measures necessary for the upliftment of tribes in India.

Answer: Article 243D provides reservation of Seats for Scheduled Tribes in Panchayats. Article 330 provides reservation of seats for Scheduled Tribes in the House of the People. Article 332 provides reservation of seats for Scheduled Tribes in Legislative Assemblies of the States.

Question 3:

A historical Hindu practice which was initially voluntary for a widow led to the degradation in the status of women in India. Define this system which is now banned.

Answer: The ancient Hindu tradition called sati, wherein a widow would throw herself on her husband’s pyre and burn to death, was initially a voluntary act considered courageous and heroic, but it later became a forced practice.

State any two advantages of the Mass Media in the light of the given statement.

Answer: 

  • It educates individuals. People get to know regarding health problems, environmental protection, and more via television and radio programmes.

Answer: Sustainable development is the overarching paradigm of the United Nations. The concept of sustainable development was described by the 1987 Bruntland Commission Report as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

(i) Briefly discuss any four economic problems of tribes in India.

(ii) Briefly discuss any four socio cultural problems of tribes in India.

Answer:

(i)

(a) Illiteracy and ignorance: In spite of the attempts of the government to provide free and compulsory education to all, most of the tribal people are deprived of education.

(b) Poverty and unemployment: Most of the tribal people are living below the poverty line. They are mainly unskilled and as such are employed at low rates. Even, they are exploited by the moneylenders and zamindars, who often try to occupy their land in return for loans.

(c) Poor health and nutrition: Infectious diseases are common among the tribal people due to unhygienic conditions. Most of them also suffer from malnutrition due to inadequate food and nutrition.

(d) Cultural problems: Due to coming in contact with the mainstream people, the culture of tribal people is deteriorating, which is leading to a degeneration of their dance, music and art forms.

Question 9:

Describe four characteristics of class.

Answer:

  1. Class system is based on occupation, wealth, education, age and sex.
  2. Hierarchy of status group. In general there are 3 class – upper middle & tower. Status, prestige & role is attached. Upper class are less in no in comparison to the other two whereas their status & prestige is most. This is like a pyramid. Karl max (Rich & poor) preliterate &
  3. Feeling of superiority & inferiority. In these 3 classes there are such feelings the upper class people feel they are superior to the other two whereas the lower class feels it is inferior to the upper class.
  4. Class consciousness – wherever a class is formed this feeling a consciousness is a must. There should be feeling of in group i.e. I belong class conflict is due to this the people of the preliterate class feel the upper class exploits them their they unite revolt.

Question 10:

With reference to the caste system, discuss the Divine Origin theory.

Answer: This is divine origin theory of castes which says that caste system was created by Brahma himself. This theory says that Brahmins originated from mouth, Khastriya from arms, Vaishyas from stomach and Sudras from feet of Brahma. However, to great extent, it gives impetus to the functional origin of the caste system.

Education is considered to be the most powerful weapon that can be used to change the world. Explain by giving any four functions of education.

Answer:

Nelson Mandela says “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.”

Education serves several functions for society. These include (a) socialization, (b) social integration, (c) social placement, and (d) social and cultural innovation.

(a) socialization: The newborn is merely an organism. Socialisation makes him responsive to the society. He is socially active. He becomes a ‘Purush’ and the culture that his group inculcates in him, humanises him, and makes him ‘Manusha’. The process indeed, is endless. The cultural pattern of his group, in the process gets incorporated in the personality of a child.

(b) social integration: Social integration also refers to a process of largely agreeing on a shared system of meaning, language, culture, and the like. This doesn’t mean there aren’t any differences, but that we kind of agree to live together and, at least to an extent, feel part of a larger community.

(c) social placement : Social placement as defined by the text is the use of education to improve one’s social standing. In other words it is placing people in higher or lower social classes based on the education level they have completed.

(d) social and cultural innovation: The Social and Cultural Innovation SWG monitors and assesses the implementation of existing Social Sciences and Humanities RIs, disseminates and shares best practices of Social Sciences and Humanities RIs, and highlights and improves the potential applications in multi-disciplinary RIs.
