Act-1 Scene-4 Summary of Macbeth

In Macbeth scene-4 of Act-1 , The scene takes place at King Duncan’s palace.

Duncan Ordered to Kill Thane of Cawdor on cheating

The king Duncan is waiting for the return of the killer who have been sent to kill the Thane of Cawdor on cheating him. His son, Malcolm, reports that the Thane of Cawdor died regretfully. Duncan expresses his surprise, as he had completely trusted at the Thane of Cawdor.

King Duncan Welcome Macbeth on bravery and loyalty in Battle

Macbeth, Banquo, Ross, and Angus then arrive at the palace. Duncan warmly greets Macbeth, expressing his deep gratitude for Macbeth’s bravery in battle and his loyalty. He feels he has not rewarded Macbeth enough for his deeds. Macbeth responds by saying that serving Duncan is its own reward.

King Declare His Successor

During the course of welcome of Macbeth, the king Duncan then announces that he will pass his kingship to his eldest son, Malcolm, naming him the Prince of Cumberland.

Macbeth Shocked at Name of Duncan’s Successor

This announcement shocks Macbeth, who had hoped to be named as Duncan’s successor. He sees Malcolm’s appointment as a major obstacle to his ambition of becoming king.

Duncan Invites Macbeth with Family

Duncan then invites Macbeth to his castle at Inverness, expressing his eagerness to meet Lady Macbeth. Macbeth leaves to deliver the news to his wife, but not before expressing his dark thoughts in a soliloquy.

Macbeth Plans to Jump Obstacle

He think the need to jump the obstacle that is Malcolm and asks the stars to hide their light so that his “black and deep desires” could not be seen.

Duncan Praising Macbeth’s Bravery

The scene ends with Duncan praising Macbeth’s bravery and deciding to follow Macbeth to Inverness, without feeling of the danger that will come soon.
