Question :- Read the following extract from the poem Nine Gold Medals by David Roth and answer the questions that follows:

“The athletes had come from all over the country 
To run for the gold, for the silver and bronze 
Many weeks and months of training 
All coming down to these games”.

Question 1 :- Explain with reference to context.

Reference : The above given stanza has been taken from the poem Nine Gold Medals written by David Roth.

Context:

In this poem, the poet is focusing on human values like compassion and cooperation. Through this poem the poet refers that sporting events or competitions are not just about winning medals but more about showing the values like kindness, empathy, love and cooperation.

One who exhibits these values can be a true sportsman, by presenting the situation of a race, where the contestants leave aside their desire to win the medal to help a smaller and weaker contestant. They all go hand-in-hand to the finishing line and all of them wins the gold medals.

Explanation:

In these lines the poet tells us that Athletes have come from many countries all over the world to take part in special Olympics . They were there to complete for medals – gold, silver and bronze. They have gone through strenuous training for months to participate in the events with high hopes and dreams of winning medals. The athletes being ‘ specially-abled’ in nature had led to endure more than the normal athletes.

It is understood that these people had to overcome their physical inabilities as well as their psychological limitations to to motivate themselves to compete just like any normal human being . It shows the strength of their character. They  had to first accept that they can also overcome challenges like anyone and that they were no inferior to anybody. The ‘Training’ denotes the mental as well as physical training of these young aspirants who had some serious limitation with them.

Question 2 :- Where did the athletes ‘come from all over the country’? Why?

Answer: Athletes from all over the world train hard to participate in the event of Special Olympics. ‘Old field ‘was the name of the venue for the concluding event mentioned in the poem. The ultimate motive of the athletes who reached there was to win medals for their brilliant performance.

Question 3 :- What do the words ‘gold’, ‘silver’ and ‘bronze’ stand for in the extract? Do you think the contestants were prepared well for the event? Give a reason for your answer.

AnswerThe words ‘gold’, ‘silver’ and ‘bronze’ stand for gold medals, Silver medals and the bronze medals. Gold medals for first position holder then silver medal for the second position holder and bronze medal for the third position holder respectively. These are the top three honors of any high-level sports competition.

Yes, the contestants were certainly prepared well for the event. As the poet says, they had undergone many weeks and months of training all coming down to these games.

Question 4 :-  What event is referred to here by the poet? What kind of athletes was they? What was their aim?

Answer: The event referred here is about the special Olympic . This is the most important event. Due to this, a large number of people use to watch this event.

The athletes described in the poem were participants who are referred as differently-abled persons. they have some problem in a particular part of a body. Their ultimate aim was to win the special Olympic and get the gold, silver and bronze medals . These medals are tokens of top honors that are conferred on best performing athletes.
