Question:  Read the following extract from Charles Dickens’s short story, “Oliver Asks for More” and answer the questions that follow:

Among other buildings in a town in England, there was a house for poor people …… … ….. …  ‘Let me see the child and die’, she said

Que-1:  Who lived in the workhouse?

Ans: The poor people who had no money or home to live in workhouse.

Que-2:  How were the babies born in work house named?

Ans: They were named in alphabetical order from A to Z by the workhouse authorities. The last baby was named Swubble, so Oliver was given the next alphabet name Twist.

Que-3: Who were present in the room where Oliver was born?

Ans: A doctor and an old woman were present in the room with his mother when Oliver was born. They stood by her bedside as she gave birth.

Que-4: The baby’s mother wished for two things. What were they?

Ans:  The mother of Oliver was very weak and on the border of death after giving birth. During dying Her two wishes were to see her newborn baby and pass away peacefully.

Que-5: How did the doctor react to one of the wishes?

Ans: As soon as Oliver’s mother expressed her wish to die after seeing her child, the doctor tried to stop her from thinking about death. He gently told her she was too young to die, attempting to give her hope.

Que-1: Who is ‘she’ referred to in the first line? What wish had she expressed earlier?

Ans: In the first line here ‘She’ refers to Oliver’s mother. Earlier, right after giving birth, she had revealed two wish to see her baby before dying.

Que-2: After kissing the baby the woman fell back. What happened to her? What do the words ‘Poor dear’ indicate?

Ans: When Oliver’s mother kissed her new born baby, she fell back limply onto her pillow and just died. The old woman’s words “Poor dear” indicate that she felt sympathy and sadness.

Que-3: What was the doctor told about the baby’s mother?

Ans: An old woman informed the doctor that Oliver’s mother had been found lying in the street the night before. She had walked a long distance and her shoes were worn out with holes. No one knew who is her.

Ans: Doctor concluded on Seeing no wedding ring on the dead woman’s hand, that  she was unmarried yet had given birth.

Ans:  Mr. Bumble was an reputed officer at the workhouse. Since the baby was orphaned and without name, Hence he named him as Oliver Twist.

Que-3: Who are ‘we’ mentioned in the passage? How did ‘we’ name new babies?

Ans: Here ‘we’ mentioned in the passage to Mr. Bumble and the other workhouse employee who suggest name for orphaned babies. They named babies in alphabetical order as per rule.

Que-4: How did Oliver look at the age of nine? Why did he look thin and pale?

Ans:  Oliver was a thin, pale child at the age nine . This was because he and the other workhouse boys were not given enough nutritious food or warm clothes.

Que-5: What was the usual food of workhouse boys? What special thing was given to them on Sundays?

Ans: Usual food in The workhouse only got three meals of thin soup per day. On Sundays, they received a small piece of bread as a special treat.

Ans: When Oliver had politely asked for more food then master hit him with his spoon and called for help to punish him for asking extra food.

Ans: The master called for Mr. Bumble to help him and teach a lesson to discipline Oliver. Mr. Bumble came in and took Oliver away, locking him in a dark room lonely.

Ans:  Mr. Bumble speaks this sentence in a shocked, disbelieving tone. Asking for more food was seen as offensive in the miserly workhouse where children were given very less amount food.

Ans: The notice displayed an amount of  five pounds to anyone who willing to adopt Oliver Twist from the workhouse’s hands. All of them wanted to get rid of Oliver on demanding more food.

Ans: The workhouse employee treated orphan children not careful, underfeeding and punishing them cruelly if any of them asked for more food.
