Que-1: The refractive index of diamond relative to air is 2.42 and that of glass is 1.51. How much faster does light travel in glass than in diamond?
Ans- ng/nd = vd/vg
=> 1.51/2.42 = vd/vg
=> vd = 2.42 vg / 1.51
=> vd = 1.60 vg
Que-2: A ray of light in air is incident on a glass plate at 45°. The refractive index of glass is 1.5. What is angle of refraction?
Ans- μ = sin i / sin r
=> 1.5 = sin 45 / sin r
=> sin r = sin 45 / 1.5
=> sin r = 0.47
=> r = sin^-1 0.47
=> r = 28°
Que-3: A ray of light which is incident in air on the surface of a glass block is deviated through 15°. The angle of incidence in air is 60°. What is the angle of refraction in glass? Also calculate the critical angle for glass-air interface. (ISC 2002)
Ans- i = 60° , r = 60-15 = 45°
ic = sin^-1 1/μ
=> sin^-1 (sin i / sin r)
=> sin^-1 (sin 45 / sin 60)
=> sin^-1 (√(2/3))
=> 54.7°
