And showed the names whom love of god had blest,
And lo! Ben Andem’s name led all the rest”.
Question 3 :- Explain with reference to context.
Reference:- The stanza has been taken from the poem Abou Ben Adhem written by Leigh Hunt.
Context:
In this poem the poet describes the spiritual experience of Abou who was a faithful and pious man. Abou awoke one night from a sleep of deep dream. He saw an angel writing something in a book of gold, which was referred as the holy book.
The angel replied that he was writing the names of those who loved God, Abou was curious to know whether his name was written there or not, but Abou’s name was not there listening to this, Abou requested the angel to write his name in the list of those who loved their friends and fellowmen.
The another night the angel came -again and showed Abou the names of those whom God loves and had blessed. Abou was surprised to see that his name was written on top.
Explanation:
The angel perhaps writes his name on that list or simply finishes his work and vanishes away. The next night angel comes again and shows the list of the people who love God and to the saint’s surprise, his name is on the top. Thus it becomes clear that those who love other people are the most loved ones of God. This is the main theme of this poem.

Answer : After coming to know that his name was not on the list, he begged the angel to write his name as lover of his fellow men.
