Question :– Read the following extract from the poem ‘ The Patriot Poem by Robert Browning and answer the questions that follow:

I go in the rain, and, more than needs,
A rope cuts both my wrists behind;
And I think, by the feel, my forehead bleeds,
For they fling, whoever has a mind,
Stones at me for my year’s misdeeds.

Question 1 Explain with reference to the context.

Reference : The stanza has been taken from the poem Patriot written by Robert Browning

Context: This poem is a analysis of politics and people’s opinion. Whenever a leader comes into power, people call him as a patriot. and When he is dethroned, the same leader is considered a traitor. This is the true of modern politics.

The leader in this poem mourn as soon as he was taken to slaughter house for hung describing his body condition.

Explanation:

In 5th Stanza the poet also mourn over his sad condition. He says that the people are carrying him to the gallows to hung in the rain . They unnecessarily, have tied his hands behind his back with a tight rope. When they are taking him to the slaughter-house, the rope cuts his both hands at wrists.
The leader feels that his fore-head is bleeding. This is because everybody is throwing stones at him. Everybody think that he has done misguide for his public.
So Every person has turned against him and the achievements of his past one year have been changed to misdeeds. This means they have forgotten his service to them and they are now punishing him for his good work for them.

Question 2: Which line is a contrast to the welcome he had received.

Answer: The lines are: For they fling, whoever has a mind, Stones at me for my year’s misdeeds. In spite of this self-sacrifice, the good deeds are seem to be oft been forgotten.

Question 3: What does the rain imagery signify?

Answer: The rain can also be seen to symbolize how the patriot is innocent as he is washed clean. As well as this, rain in general represents corruption creating a negative tense mood. This describes the public who are clearly corrupt for hanging somebody who has doing nothing wrong.

Question 4: Explain the meaning “a rope cut both my wrists behind”

Answer :  The leader wrist are so tight that feels rope is cutting his skin / hand at slaughter house.

Question 5: Why speaker use “my years misdeeds” in the poem.

Answer: Speaker could not know what was the true reason of his punishment hence called his work as misdeeds.

Question 6: How does extract reflect the public mood conversation.

Answer:  The extract reflect that mood of public is temporary and can be easily change within a short time.

Question 7: Why does speaker forehead bleed?

Answer : People has thrown stone at his at gallop while hand was tight by ropes. Therefore he can only feel the blood but could not touch.
