Question 1. Water is heated from 0°C   to. 10°C   How does the density of water change with temperature?

Answer:

On heating from  0°C the density of water increases up to  4°C  and then decreases beyond 4°C.

Question 2. What do you understand by the term relative density of a substance?

Answer:

The relative density of a substance is the ratio of density of that substance to the density of given reference material and the density of water at 4°C.

Question 3. Define relative density as a ratio of mass ?

Answer:

Relative density is also defined as a ratio of mass of a certain volume of a substance to the mass of an equal volume of water at 4°C.

Question 4. Differentiate between density and relative density of a substance.

Answer:

Density Relative density
The density of a material is its mass per unit volume. Relative density of a substance is the ratio of density of a substance to the density of water.
ρ = m/V RD = ρsubstance/ρwate
SI unit of density is kg/m3. Relative density is a dimensionless quantity.

Density of a substance is the ratio of its mass to its volume but R.D. of a substance is the ratio of density of that substance to the density of water at 4°C.
