STUDY QUESTIONS

Question 1.

(a) State what do you understand by the area of an object.

Answer: Area is defined as the total space taken up by a flat (2-D) surface or shape of an object. The space enclosed by the boundary of a plane figure is called its area.

(b) State the standard international unit of area.

Answer: The SI unit of area is the square meter (m2), which is a derived unit.

(c) State two multiples and two sub-multiples f SI unit of area and express their numerical values in SI units.

Answer: Two multiples of of SI unit of area are, km² (square kilometres) , and Mm² (square megametres). To properly understand this answer, we have to know more about SI units and their multiples

Question 2. How can you find the length of a rectangular body, if you know its area and breadth without using a measuring scale?

Answer: When we need to find length of a rectangle we need to divide area by breadth. Length of a rectangle = Area ÷ breadth. ℓ = A ÷ b. Similarly, when we need to find breadth of a rectangle we need to divide area by length. Breadth of a rectangle = Area ÷ length.

Question 3. Without using a measuring scale, how can you find the area of the following correctly?

(a) 5 rupees coin: We can find the area of 5 rs coin with help of centimeter graph paper. Place the coin one the centimeter graph paper and with help of sharp pencil mark the outline of the coin on the paper. Now count the number of complete squares enclosed in the outline of the coin

(b) A playing card: by graph paper

(c) A banyan leaf: The area of a leaf is obtained by using a graph paper. A graph paper has small squares of area 1 mm 2 each. The area of the leaf will be equal to the number of squares it covers on the graph paper

Question 4. Using an appropriate measuring instrument (name the instrument) how can you find the area of a :

(a) postal stamp– by study scale of geometry box

(b) greeting card – by big scale

(c) school hall – by meter tape

(d) football ground– by long meter rolled tape

Question 5. There is a circular field of area of approx. 500 m2. How can you find its area accurately by using a measuring tape?

Answer: By using measuring tape, measure the diameter of the circular field i.e. from one side of the circular field to the other side. Now divide the diameter by 2 which gives radius of circular field. Now using the formula A=π ×r2A=π ×r2 we can find area of circular field
