Biology Paper 1 (Theory)


Maximum Marks: 70
Time Allowed: Three hours

(Candidates are allowed additional 15 minutes for only reading the paper. They must NOT start writing during this time).


  • This paper is divided into four sections – A, B, C and D.
  • Answer all questions.
  • Section A consists of one question having sub-parts of one mark each.
  • Section B consists of seven questions of two marks each.
  • Section C consists of nine questions of three marks each, and
  • Section D consists of three questions of five marks each.
  • Internal choices have been provided in two questions each in Section B, Section C and Section D.
  • The intended marks for questions are given in brackets [ ].

Question 2:

(i) How does the Reproductive and Child Health Care Programme run by the government benefit the society?

OR

(ii) Write any four causes of infertility in males.

Answer:  (i) Reproductive and Child Health Care Programme tries to address all the aspects of reproductive health. This program focuses on the proper care of the child and the mother. It also promotes the proper use of contraceptives so that family size can be planned and can be limited.

  2. Using alcohol.
  3. Using certain illicit drugs.
  4. Being overweight.

Question 3: What is meant by lactational amenorrhoea? Discuss the physiological mechanism which makes lactational amenorrhoea a natural contraceptive method.

Answer:  Lactational amenorrhea is an effective method to prevent pregnancy and space births. Ovulation does not occur during breastfeeding so one can not get pregnant during lactation. It is a good method of birth control if a mother is exclusively breastfeeding in the first six months after giving birth.

Question 4: Study the pedigree chart given below and answer the questions that follow.

Question 6: Give any two differences between normal body cells and cancer cells.

Answer: Normal cells follow a typical cycle: They grow, divide and die.Cancer cells, on the other hand, don’t follow this cycle. Instead of dying, they multiply and continue to reproduce other abnormal cells. These cells can invade body parts, such as the breast, liver, lungs and pancreas.

(i) Name the first human-like hominid ancestor. What was its cranial capacity?

(ii) Name the hominid ancestor that existed about 1‧5 mya. What was its cranial capacity?

Answer:  (i) Homo habilis is considered as the first human-like creature or hominid to walk on earth. They had a brain capacity of 650-800 cc and were probably vegetarians.

Question 8: A person in good health visited a garden where flowers were in full bloom. While returning from the garden he suddenly started sneezing and wheezing.

(i) Name and define the response of the person’s immune system in the abovementioned case.

(ii) Name the cell of the immune system and the type of antibody involved in this kind of response.
