Biology Solutions Chapter-6 Unit-1

Que: I. Fill in the blanks:

1. Two principal fluids involved in transportation in our body are Blood and lymph.

2. The heart in humans consists of four chambers, comprising two atria and two ventricles.

3. Lymph contains white cells called lymphocytes (LIM-fuh-sites).

4. In patients with irregular heart beats, an artificial machine called A pacemaker  is used.

Que: II. Multiple choice questions. Tick (√) the correct choice :

1. Pulmonary veins carry

(a) Oxygenated blood

(b) Lymph

(c) Deoxygenated blood

(d) Both (a) and (b)

Answer: option (a) Oxygenated blood is correct.

2. Lymph has

(a) RBCs

(b) Red colour

(c) Only WBCs

(d) More proteins and calcium than blood

Answer: option (c) Only WBCs is correct.

3. Blood circulation takes the following course in the human heart:

(a) Left atrium →  left ventricle →  lungs →  right atrium →  right ventricle

(b) Right atrium →  right ventricle

(c) Left atrium →  left ventricle

(d) Right atrium →  right ventricle →  lungs →  left atrium →  left ventricle

Answer: option (d) Right atrium →  right ventricle →  lungs →  left atrium →  left ventricle is correct.

4. Which blood vessels carry blood from lungs to the heart?

(a) Pulmonary veins

(b) Coronary arteries

(c) Coronary veins

(d) Pulmonary arteries

Answer: option (a) Pulmonary veins is correct.

5. Tricuspid valve is present between :

(a) Right atrium and right ventricle

(b) The two atria

(c) The two ventricles

(d) Left atrium and left ventricle

Answer: option (a) Right atrium and right ventricle is correct.

6. The heart is covered by

(a) Pleural membrane

(b) Pericardium

(c) Meninges

(d) Conjunctiva

Answer: option (b) Pericardium is correct.

Que: III. Name the following:

Question: 1. The valve present between left auricle and left ventricle.

Answer: left atrio-ventricular valve

Question: 2. The valve present in the pulmonary artery.

Answer: Pulmonary valve

Que: IV. Answer the following:

Question: 1. What is double circulation? Explain with the help of a diagrammatic representation.

Answer: A mechanism in which blood circulates twice through the heart in one complete cycle is known as double circulation. Systemic circulation and pulmonary circulation are two pathways in which the blood flows in double circulation. A food web can be termed as the combination of many different food chains and the relationship that exists between each organism. In a food web, an organism of higher trophic level has access to more members of a lower trophic level.

Question: 2. What are the two types of circulation of blood present in our body?

Answer: The two types of circulation of blood present in our body:

  • The pulmonary circulation is a short loop from the heart to the lungs and back again.
  • The systemic circulation carries blood from the heart to all the other parts of the body and back again.
Question: 3. List the differences between blood and lymph.

Answer:

Blood Lymph
1. Contains blood plasma with blood platelets and proteins. Contains blood plasma only.
2. Due to the presence of hemoglobin, it carries oxygen. Does not carry oxygen gas.
3. Red in colour due to the presence of RBCs. Yellow in colour.
4. RBCs, WBCs and platelets are found. Special cells lymphocytes are found which help to develop immunity.
Question: 4. Draw a neat well labelled outline diagram showing the internal structure of human heart.

Answer: Draw a neat well labelled outline diagram showing the internal structure of human heart

Question: 5. With the help of an illustration describe the various parts of human heart.

Answer: The heart is roughly cone shaped hollow organ. It is approximately the size of owner’s closed fist and weighs about 250-300 gm in female and 300-350gm in the male. The heart lies in the thoracic cavity in the space between the lungs (mediastinum) anterior to the vertebral column and posterior to the sternum. The heart consists of 4 chambers. At first, the heart is divided into the right and left side by the septum. Each side is further divided into 2 chambers each by the atrioventricular valve. The upper two chambers are called atrium and lower two are called ventricles. Atrium are thin-walled chamber separated by an interarticular septum.

The right atrium receives impure blood from the body through the opening via superior and inferior vena cava. Ventricles are a thick-walled chamber. separated by the thick inter-ventricular septum.
