II. Fill in the blanks :

  1. Saliva is secreted by the Salivary gland in the mouth cavity.
  2. Number of molar teeth present in an human adult are 12.
  3. The teeth which help in biting the food in humans are the Incisor.
  4. Food is digested by chemicals called Salivary amylase.
  5. Changing food to a usable form is called Digestion.
  6. The liver and Pancreas are found near the stomach.
  7. The five steps in the process of nutrition are ingestion, digestion, absorption, assimilation, egestion.

III. Which of the following statements are true (T) and which ones are false (F) ? Mark T or F :

  1. Canines are meant for tearing flesh.  [ T  ]
  2. Molar teeth are present in a human baby.  [ F  ]
  3. Mouth cavity is also known as the food pipe.  [ F  ]
  4. Gastric juice is secreted by the small intestine.  [ F  ]
  5. Food is mostly digested in stomach.  [ F  ]
  6.  In humans, there are 14 teeth in each jaw.  [ F  ]

IV Complete the following table :

Part of the digestive system Enzyme/digestive juice Food acted upon  Product formed
    Mouth      Saliva (amylase)         Starch Sugars
Stomach     Gastric juice        Proteins Amino acids
Small       intestine     intestinal juice   Partially           digested     proteins and carbohydrates Glucose and others simple sugers

V. Answer the following questions :

Question 1: Define the following terms :

(a) Ingestion  – ngestion is the process of taking in food through the mouth. In vertebrates, the teeth, saliva, and tongue play important roles in mastication (preparing the food into bolus). While the food is being mechanically broken down, the enzymes in saliva begin to chemically process the food as well

(b) Adsorption – The process of taking nutrients from the digestive system into the blood so they can be used in the body.

(c) Digestion –  The process of breaking down food into substances the body can use for energy, tissue growth, and repair.

(d) Assimilation – Assimilation is the process of absorbing nutrients during digestion and distributing them to the body for growth and repair. The small intestine uses microvilli to absorb nutrients.

(e) Alimentary  canal – It runs from the mouth to the anus (where poop comes out) and includes the esophagus, stomach, and intestines.

(f) Digestive system – The digestive system includes the mouth, pharynx (throat), esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus.

(g) Enzymes – proteins that your body makes to break down food and aid digestion.

Question 2: Name the following :

(a) Different organs of the digestive system.

Answer – The digestive system includes the mouth, pharynx (throat), esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus.

(b) Different types of teethe in an adult human being.

Answer – Types of teethe in an adult human being –

  • Incisors.
  • Canines.
  • Premolars.
  • Molars.

(c) The digestive juices secreted by mouth, pancreas, stomach and small intestine.

Answer – Certain organs such as liver and pancreas also secrete digestive juices. The liver secretes bile juice which is used for the digestion of fats. Pancreas, on the other hand, produces pancreatic juice which digests starch and proteins into their simpler constituents.

Question 3: Complete the following by giving the name of digestive juice/enzyme and the product formed  in each case.

(a) Protein : it is secreted form stomach called  gastric juice (pepsin) which convert protein into amino acid.

(b) Starch : it is secreted form mouth called saliva (amylase) which convert starch (a carbohydrate) into sugars.

Question 4: Describe the functions of the following :

(a) Saliva – Saliva contains special enzymes that help digest the starches in your food.        (b) Oesophagus – The oesophagus is to allow for the passage of material from the mouth and throat to the stomach.

(c) Tongue –  Tongue moves food around your mouth to help you chew and swallow.          (d) Digestive system – Digestive system breaks nutrients into parts small enough for your body to absorb and use for energy, growth, and cell repair.

Question 5: Give the functions of different types of teeth in an adult human.

Answer: Incisors are the teeth that we use to bite into our food.

Canines – our canines are the next teeth that develop in your mouth. we have four of them and they are our sharpest teeth, used for tearing apart food.

Premolars – molars are used for grinding and crushing food

Question 6: Give a brief of enzymes of juice secreted by different parts of digestive system.

Answer : mouth – release saliva (amylase),

Stomach – release gastric juice (pepsin),

Pancreas – release pancreatic amylase, trypsin, lipase

Small intestine – release intestinal juice (several enzymes)

Question 7: Represent the digestive system by means of a labelled diagram.

Answer :

Represent the digestive system by means of a labelled diagram

Question 8: Mention various steps in the process of digestion in human.

Answer : various steps in the process of digestion in human are following

ingestion, motility, mechanical digestion, chemical digestion, absorption, and defecation.
