Algebra is the branch of Maths which uses alphabetical letters to find unknown numbers. These letters are also called variables. The values which are known in the given expression such as numbers are called constants
Basic Algebra
The algebra for class 6 covers all the basic concepts. Terms related to basic algebra skills are mentioned below.
- Exponent
- Expression
- Polynomial (Monomial, binomial and trinomial)
- Like terms and Unlike terms
- Constants
Basic Algebra Operations
The general arithmetic operations performed in the case of algebra are:
- Addition: x + y
- Subtraction: x – y
- Multiplication: xy
- Division: x/y or x ÷ y
where x and y are the variables
The order of these operations will follow the BODMAS rule, which means the terms inside the brackets are considered first. Then, roots and exponents are operated on second priority
algebraic expression
In mathematics, an algebraic expression is an expression built up from integer constants, variables, and the algebraic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and exponentiation by an exponent that is a rational number
Polynomials in one variable
Polynomials in one variable are algebraic expressions that consist of terms in the form where n is a non-negative (i.e. positive or zero) integer and a is a real number and is called the coefficient of the term. The degree of a polynomial in one variable is the largest exponent in the polynomial
The Building Blocks of Algebraic Expressions
- The basic building blocks of algebraic expressions are variables and constants. Algebraic expressions are created by combining numbers and variables using arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and exponentiation.
- A term can be a number, a variable, or the product of a number and variables with an exponent.
- The number part of the term is called the coefficient. That is, the coefficient is the number that is multiplied by a variable or variables.
Degree of a Polynomial (with one variable)
5x4 + 7x – 15 ( This is an example of a polynomial which has 3 terms )
The Degree (for a polynomial with one variable, like x) is:… the largest exponent of that variable.
To find the degree all that you have to do is find the largest exponent of the polynomial.
Note: Ignore coefficients — coefficients have nothing to do with the degree of a polynomial
