SECTION B

(Attempt any three questions from this Section.)

Question 2:

(i)

(a) Give any one use of Manganese.

(b) Why is copper used in electrical appliances?

(ii) Give two advantages of using Natural gas over coal.

(iii) With reference to Bhakra Nangal dam answer the following:

(a) On which river is it situated?

(b) Name any two states benefitted by Bhakra Nangal.

(iv)

(a) Mention two advantages of using biogas.

(b) How has the nuclear power contributed in reducing the pressure on Conventional sources of energy?

Answer :

(i)

(a) It is an important raw material in the iron and steel industry as it is used for hardening steel and prevents it from rusting.

(b) A copper wire is used for almost everything electrical-related at home because it is a good conductor of electricity. Its metallic properties enable the wires to carry more electrical current per diameter of the copper wire.

(ii) Natural gas is better for the environment than other fossil fuels. Natural gas also produces nearly a third less carbon dioxide than coal and almost half less than oil when burned. Natural gas also emits little to no sulfur, meaning it is eco-friendlier and runs more efficiently than other fuels.

(iii)

(a) Satluj river

(b) Conventional energy sources such as natural gas, oil, coal, or nuclear are finite but still hold the majority of the energy market.

(iv)

(a)

Renewable Source of Energy:

Organic materials are derived from plants, animals, and humans. Raw materials can be reproduced, making biogas a green energy source. It also lessens the damaging impact and improper wastes disposal.

Utilization of Waste:

Instead of letting the wastes rot in landfills, it is more advantageous to utilize and turn them into biogas. An environmental hazard is reduced due to lesser methane, carbon dioxide, and other greenhouse gases produced. Wastes are turned into energy to utilize for electricity, heating, cooking, and as fertilizers.

(b) Conventional sources of energy such as natural gas, oil, coal, or nuclear are finite but still hold the majority of the energy market. Nuclear power brought a revolutionary change in reducing the pressure of conventional sources as they are finite so it helped in the consumption of oil, coal, and natural gas.

Question 3:

(i) Mention two ways in which agriculture sector is important for India.

(ii)

(a) Name two agriculture seasons of India.

(b) Name one crop that grows in each of the season mentioned by you.

(iii) With reference to Wheat cultivation answer the following:

(a) Name the soil found suitable for its growth.

(b) Name the state that is the largest producer of this crop in India

(c) Why is this crop not grown in southern parts of India?

(iv)

(a) Name the largest producer of tea in India.

(b) What is GINNING?

(c) Why is PRUNING essential for tea crop?

Answer : update soon

Question 4:

(i) Differentiate between public sector and private sector industry giving suitable example for each from India.

(ii) Give two ways in which cotton textile industry is important for India.

(iii) With reference to Rourkela steel plant answer the following:

(a) Where is it located?

(b) Which country helped India to establish this steel plant?

(c) From where does it get its iron ore requirement?

(iv)

(a) What are the benefits of using petrochemical products? (Any two)

(b) How has the electronic industry revolutionized the entertainment sector?

Answer : update soon

Question 5:

(i) Mention two advantages of using waterways.

(ii) Differentiate between national highway and state highway.

(iii) Mention three benefits of Golden quadrilateral.

(iv) What are the three disadvantages of using air transport?

Answer :

(i)

1.It is very beneficial to transport heavy and bulky materials.

2.It is the most inexpensive mean of transport.

(ii)

National Highways State Highways
1. The major roads constructed and maintained by the Central Government are known as the national highways. 1. The roads are constructed and maintained by the State Governments are known as the state highways.
2. They connect state capitals and industrial cities with harbours. 2. These roads connect the state capitals with district towns.

(iii)

  1. This highway interconnects many major cities and ports. It provides an impetus to truck transport throughout India.
  2. It enables the industrial growth of all small towns through which it passes.
  3. It provides vast opportunities for transport of agricultural produce from hinterland to major cities and ports for export.

(iv)

Risky:

Air travel is the riskiest mode of transport, since there can be considerable losses to goods, customer and crews as a result of a minor crash. Compared to other means of travel, the risks of collisions are higher.

Cost:

Air travel is considered to be the most expensive means of transportation. The cost of maintaining aircraft is higher and the costs for the building of aerodromes and avions are much higher. That’s why air travel is so expensive that it gets beyond ordinary people’s grasp.

Some Product Limitation:

There is a whole variety of materials not suitable for such products, from explosives, gases, batteries, fired solids and liquids, which cannot be shipped by air to name but a few.

Question 6:

(i) Why is there a need for waste management in India? (Two points)

(ii) Segregation considered a safe method of waste disposal. Explain.

(iii) Mention three ways that may be used in India to reduce waste.

(iv) Mention three reasons as to why the dumping of waste may be harmful.

Answer :

 (i) Waste management infrastructure has an important role in delivering sustainable development. Rapid population growth in India has led to depletion of natural resources. Wastes are potential resources and effective waste management with resource extraction is fundamental to effective SWM.

(ii) Segregation is one of the most important activities that we need to promote and enforce for effective waste management in urban area and to make landfills reduce in size gradually and finally come to no landfills in four-five decades from now.

 (iii)

  • Reusable bags and containers. Bring them with you when you shop, travel, and when packaging food! We recommend using bags made from recyclable material and glassware for food storage.
  • Reuse water bottles, coffee mugs, and plates too! Skip the plastic or paper and get yourself some reusable and refillable kitchenware.
  • Skip on individually wrapped items, specifically food in snack packs or single-serving containers.

(iv)

Water Contamination:

Water is an excellent solvent; it can contain numerous dissolved chemicals. As a  result, while moving through, water picks up pollution along the way. It often has dissolved substances like various chemicals and gases.

Extreme Weather Caused By Climate Change:

Firstly, harmful greenhouse gases are created from decomposing waste. These rise up to the atmosphere and trap heat. This adversely causes extreme weather reactions in the form of storms and typhoons.

Air Contamination:

A lot of it leaves us feeling hopeless for we feel unable to make necessary changes. We think we cannot consume any less. Even so, we can, at least, follow strict protocol over how it’s recycled.
