Exercise- 6A Heat and Temperature
page -145
Very Short Answer :
Que-1: What is heat? Write its S.I. unit.
Ans: Heat is a form of energy that is transferred between two bodies at two different temperatures when kept in contact. Its S.I. unit is joule (J).
Que-2: Two bodies at different temperatures are placed in contact. State the direction in which heat will flow.
Ans: When two bodies at different temperatures are placed in contact with each other, then heat flows from the body at higher temperature to the body at lower temperature.
Que-3: Name the S.I. unit of heat. How is it related to the unit calorie?
Ans: The S.I. unit of heat is joule (J).
1 J = 0.24 cal
1 cal is 4.2 J
Que-4: Define temperature and write its S.I. unit.
Ans: Temperature is a quantity which determines the direction of flow of heat on keeping two bodies in contact at different temperatures. Its SI unit is Kelvin (K).
Que-5: Why does a piece of ice when touched with hand, appear cool? Explain.
Ans: When we touch a piece of ice, heat flows from our hand from high temperature to the ice at lower temperature and hence, we feel cool.
Que-6: Name two substance which expand on heating.
Ans: Brass and Iron.
Que-7: Name two substance which contract on heating.
Ans: Water and Silver Iodine
Que-8: What do you mean by anomalous expansion of water?
Ans: Expansion of water on cooling from 4°C to 0°C.
Que-9: At what temperature the density of water is maximum? State its value.
Ans: Density of water is maximum at 4°C. Its value is 1000 kgm-3.
Que-10: Deep pond of water its top layer frozen during winter. State the expected temperature of water layer
(i) just in contact with ice, (ii) at the bottom pond.
Ans: (i) water just in contact with ice is at 0°C.
(ii) Water at the bottom of bond is at 4°C.
