KE PE and Total Energy in SHM
Q-11. A body whose mass is 0.50 kg is executing SHM. Its period is 0.1 s and amplitude 10 cm. When the body is at a distance of 5 cm from the mean position, then find out its acceleration, force acting upon it and its potential energy.
Ans: Given m = 0.5 kg T = 0.1 s A = 10 cm = 0.1 m
=> ω = 2 π / T = 2 π / 0.1 = 20 π
acceleration = ω² x
=> (20 π)² x 5 x 10^-2 = 197.2 m s^-2
F = m a
=> 0.5 x 197.2 = 98.6 N
Potential Energy (U) = 1/2 m ω² x²
=> 1/2 x 0.5 x (20 π)² x (5 x 10^-2)² = 2.465 J
Q-12. A body of mass 8 kg is executing SHM whose amplitude is 30 cm. When the body is in a position of maximum displacement, then the force acting on it is 60 N. Calculate: (i) time-period, (ii) acceleration, potential energy and kinetic energy at 12 cm displacement.
Ans: m = 8 kg A = 30 cm = 0.3 m
F = m ω² a
=> ω² = F / m a = 60 / 8 x 0.3
(i) ω = √600 / 24 => T = 2 π / ω
=> 2 π √24 / 600 = 1.256 s
(ii) α = ω² x
=> α = (600 / 24) x 12 x 10^-2 = 3 m s^-2
(iii) U = 1/2 m ω² x²
=> (1 / 2) x 8 x (600 / 24) x (12 x 10^-2)² = 1.44 J
K = 1/2 m ω² (a² – x²)
=> (1 / 2) x 8 x (600 / 24) x (0.3² – 0.12²) = 7.56 J
Q-13. Two exactly identical simple pendulums are oscillating with amplitudes 2 cm and 6 cm. Calculate the ratio of their energies of oscillation.
Ans: E1 / E2 = a1² / a2² = (2/6)²
=> 1 : 9
