Rational Numbers Class- 7th RS Aggarwal Exe-4 B Goyal Brothers ICSE Math Solution

1. Which of the two rational numbers is greater in each of the following pairs?

(i) (3/-7) or (1/7)

Solution: (3/-7) or (1/7)

∴ Both denominator are same.

So, Positive integer is always greater than negative integer.

Hance, (3/-7) < (1/7)

(ii) (11/-18) or (-5/18)

Solution: (11/-18) or (-5/18)

= (-11, -5)/18               [L.C.M]

= (-11/18), (-5/18)

So, (-11/18) < (-5/18)

(iii) (7/10) or (-9/10)

Solution: (7/10) or (-9/10)

∴ Both denominator are same.

So, Positive integer is always greater than negative integer.

Hance, (7/10) > (-9/10)

(iv) 0 or (-3/4)

Solution: 0 or (-3/4)

∴ 0 is always greater than every negative integer.

So, 0 > (-3/4)

(v) (1/12) or 0

Solution: (1/12) or 0

∴  0 is always smaller than every negative integer.

So, (1/12) > 0

(vi) (18/-19) or 0

Solution: (18/-19) or 0

∴ 0 is always greater than every negative integer.

(vii) (7/8) or (11/16)

Solution: (7/8) or (11/16)

Take L.C.M of 8 & 16

(7/8) , (11/16)

(14 , 11)/16 = (14/16) , (11/16)

(14/16) > (11/16) = So, (7/8) > (11/16)

(viii) (11/-12) or (-10/11)

Solution: (11/-12) or (-10/11)

(-121 , -120)/132                   [L.C.M]

(-121/132) , (-120/132)

Hance, (11/-12) < (-10/11)

(ix) (-13/5) or -4

Solution: (-13/5) or -4

(-13/5) or (-4/1)

(-13 , -20)/5                       [L.C.M]

(-13/5) > (-20/5)

Hance, (-13/5) > -4

(x) (17/-6) or (-13/4)

Solution: (17/-6) or (-13/4)

(-34 , -39)/12                      [L.C.M]

(-34/12) > (-39/12)

Hance, (-17/6)  > (-13/4)

(xi) (7/-9) or (-5/8)

Solution: (7/-9) or (-5/8)

(-56 , -45)/72                   [L.C.M]

(-56/72) < (-45/72)

Hance, (7/-9) < (-5/8)

(xii) (-3/-8) or (5/9)

Solution: (-3/-8) or (5/9)

(27 , 40)/72                    [L.C.M]

(27/72) < (40/72)

Hance, (-3/-8) < (5/9)

2. Fill in the blanks with the correct symbol out of >, = or < :

(i) (-17/4)..<…(-15/4)

(ii) 0 …<… (-1/-2)

(iii) (4/-3) …<… (-8/7)

(iv) (-5/12) … >… (7/-16)

(v) (-7/8) … >… (-8/9)

(vi) (1/-10) …<… (-4/-5)

3. Arrange the following rational numbers in ascending order :

(i) (3/4), (5/8), (11/16), (21/32)

Solution: (5/8), (21/32), (11/16), (3/4)

(ii) (-2/5), (7/-10), (-8/15), (17/-30)

Solution: (7/-10), (17/-30), (-8/15), (-2/5)

(iii) (5/-12), (-2/3), (-7/9), (11/-18)

Solution: (-7/9), (-2/3), (11/-18), (5/-12)

(iv) (-4/7), (13/-28), (9/14), (23/42)

Solution: (-4/7), (13/-28), (23/42), (9/14)

4. Arrange the following rational numbers in descending order :

(i) (11/12), (13/18), (5/6), (7/9)

Solution: (11/12), (5/6), (7/9), (13/18)

(ii) (-11/20), (3/-10), (17/-30), (-7/15)

Solution: (3/-10), (-7/15), (-11/20), (17/-30)

(iii) (9/-24), -1, (2/-3), (-7/-6)

Solution: (-7/-6), (9/-24), (2/-3), -1

(iv) (7/-10), (11/15), (-17/-30), (-2/5)

Solution: (11/15), (-17/-30), (-2/5), (7/-10)
