Questions 1. Explain the structure of middle ear with the help of diagram.

Answer : The middle ear is an air-filled cavity that sits between the tympanic membrane  and the inner ear. The middle ear also consists of three tiny bones called ossicles ,the round window  the oval window , and the Eustachian tube

Questions 2. What are the common defects of eyes? How would you correct them?

Answer : Vision problems such as myopia and hyperopia can be corrected with lenses that help focus light on the retina. Myopia is corrected with a concave lens, while hyperopia is corrected with a convex lens

Questions 3. Explain the structure of cochlea in man

Answer : Structure of the cochlea. The cochlea contains the sensory organ of hearing. It bears a striking resemblance to the shell of a snail and in fact takes its name from the Greek word for this object. The cochlea is a spiral tube that is coiled two and one-half turns around a hollow central pillar, the modiolus

Questions 4. Draw a diagram of the human eye as seen in a vertical section and label the parts which suit the following descriptions relating to the:

(a) Photosensitive layer of the eye.

(b) Structure which is responsible for holding the eye lens in its position.

(c) Structure which maintains the shape of the eye ball and the area of no vision.

(d) Anterior chamber seen in front of the eye lens.

(e) Outermost transparent layer seen in front of the eye ball.

Answer :

(a) The photosensitive layer of the eye is retina.

(b) The structure which is responsible for holding the eye lens in its position called as suspensory ligament
(c) The structure which maintains the shape of the eyeball and the area of no vision is vitreous humor
(d) The anterior chamber is seen in front of the eye lens, called as blind spot
 (e) The outermost transparent layer in front of the eyeball called as conjunctiva

Questions 5.

(a) Draw a well labelled diagram of the membranous labyrinth.

(b) Based on the diagram drawn above in (a) give a suitable term for each of the following description:

(i) The sensory cells that help in hearing.

(ii) The part that is responsible for static balance of the body.

(iii) The membrane covered opening that connects the middle ear to the inner ear.

(iv) The fluid present in the middle chamber of cochlea.

(v) The structure that maintains dynamic equilibrium of the body.

Answer :

(b) Utricle and saccule are the parts responsible for static balance. The utricle and saccule form the two otolith organs in the vertebrate inner ear and are part of the balancing system (membranous labyrinth) in the vestibule of the bony labyrinth (small oval chamber).  They use small stones and viscous fluid to stimulate hair cells to detect motion and orientation.
(b) Fenestra Vestibuli is the membrane that covers the opening that connects the middle ear to the inner ear.
(c) Endolymph is the fluid present in the middle chamber of the cochlea.  It surrounds the organ of Corti located in the scala media.
(d) The semicircular canals and vestibule maintain the dynamic balance of the body and are responsible for angular acceleration and linear motion in the vertical direction of the head respectively
