Time Allowed: Three hours

Question 2: Briefly explain the term tribe. Discuss any three features of tribe.

Answer: Tribe’ is defined as a social group bound together by kin and duly associated with a particular territory.

  1. Some tribes were nomadic and moved from one place to another.
  2. A tribal group controlled land and pastures jointly, and divided these amongst households according to its own rules.
  3. Many large tribes evolved in different parts of the subcontinent.

Question 3: What is meant by the term inequality? Discuss any three elements of social stratification.

Answer: The quality of being unequal or uneven: such as.

(a) social disparity.

(b) disparity of distribution or opportunity.

(c) lack of evenness.

Social stratification refers to a society’s categorization of its people into rankings based on factors like wealth, income, education, family background, and power.

Question 4: Define monogamy as a form of marriage. Discuss any three functions of monogamy.

Answer: Monogamy is a relationship with only one partner at a time, rather than multiple partners. A monogamous relationship can be sexual or emotional, but it’s usually both. Many modern relationships are monogamous.

Functions of monogamy

  • preventing vicious sexual competition,
  • bearing and rearing children,
  • establishing relationships of intimacy and devotion,
  • sharing other mutual goals.

Question 5: Elaborate on any four functions of family.

Answer: Functions of family

  • physical maintenance and care of family members;
  • addition of new members through adoption or procreation;
  • socialization of children;
  • social control of its members;
  • production, consumption and distribution of goods and services; and
  • affective nurturance (love).

Question 6: Briefly explain the kinship usage of Couvade.

Answer: Couvade: Under this kinship usage whenever the wife gives birth to a child the husband is made to lead the life of same taboos which his wife observes during pregnancy e.g in Khasi and Toda tribes the husband of pregnant wife is refrained from active work and also takes sick diet same as his wife.

Question 7: Discuss the impact of culture contact on dormitories.

Answer: The cultural contact with Hindus and conversion to Christianity has led to a decay of tribal dormitories. The glamour of urban life and inferior treatment of dormitories by the outside people has led tribals to get detached from their own dormitories. Some of them secretly continue with them but feel shy to admit it.

Question 8:

(i) Shifting – axe – cultivation is not considered a viable economic activity for the tribes any longer. Discuss the given statement with respect to any four drawbacks of shifting – axe – cultivation.

(ii) The Weekly Haat is an example of a traditional market. Briefly discuss the concept of the Weekly Haat in the light of the given statement.
