Problems/Questions on Speed Distance Time with Solutions/Answer
- Speed = Distance/Time – This tells us how slow or fast an object moves. It describes the distance travelled divided by the time taken to cover the distance.
- Speed is directly Proportional to Distance and Inversely proportional to Time. Hence,
- Distance = Speed X Time, and
- Time = Distance / Speed, as the speed increases the time taken will decrease and vice versa.
- To convert from km / hour to m / sec, we multiply by 5 / 18. So, 1 km / hour = 5 / 18 m / sec
- To convert from m / sec to km / hour, we multiply by 18 / 5. So, 1 m / sec = 18 / 5 km / hour = 3.6 km / hour
- For a certain distance, if the ratio of speeds is a : b, then the ratio of times taken to cover the distance would be b : a
Average Speed
Average Speed = (Total distance traveled)/(Total time taken )
Meeting Point Questions
If two people travel from two points A and B towards each other, and they meet at point P. The total Distance covered by them on the meeting will be AB. The Time taken by both of them to meet will be the same. As the Time is constant, Distances AP and BP will be in the ratio of their Speed. Say that the Distance between A and B is d.
Exercise- 11A
(Speed Distance and Time MCQs Class 6 RS Aggarwal Goyal Brothers ICSE Maths Solutions Ch-11)
Que-1: A bus travels a distance of 186 km in 2 hours 35 minutes. What is the speed of the bus in km/hr ?
Sol: Distance = 186 Km.
Time = 2hr + 35/60 hr.
Speed = Distance/Time
Speed = 186 ÷ 31/12
= 72 Km/hr.
Que-2: A train covers 35 km in 25 minutes. What is the speed of the train in km/hr ?
Sol: speed = distance ÷ time
distance = 35km
time = 25÷60
speed = 35 ÷ (25÷60)
thus speed = 84 km/hr.
Que-3: A man walks 8 km in 1 hour 20 minutes. What is the speed of the man in km/hr ?
Sol: Distance = 8 km
Time = 1 hr 20 min
= 1 + (20/60) = 4/3 hours
Speed = Distance/Time
= 8/(4/3)
= 6 km/hr
Que-4: A man cycles at 12 km per hour. How much distance does he covers in 35 minutes ?
Sol: Given that the speed = 12 km/hour
time = 35 minutes.
=35/60 hrs = 712 hrs
Distance = ?
Distance = Time × Speed
Distance = (7/12)×12 = 7
Therefore, the man covers 7km.
Que-5: A car is travelling at a rate of 72 km/hr. How far will it travel in 25 minutes ?
Sol: speed = 72km/hour
or 25m/time = 25min
= 25×60 = 150
= 30000m = 30km.
Que-6: A cyclist cover 1.5 km in 5 minutes. Find his speed in km/hr.
Sol: A cyclist covers kms in 5 minutes= 1.5km
He covered kms in 1 minute=1.5 ÷ 5=0.3
So,he covered kms in 1 hour = 0.3×60 = 18
Que-7: Sajjal is going on his scooty at a speed of 24 km/hr. How much time will he take to cover 1 km 600 m ?
Sol: Speed of the scooter = 24 km/hr
We know that Distance = Speed × Time
Distance covered is 1 km and 600 m which is 1.6 km.
Substituting in the formula we get,
⇒ 1.6 km = 24 km/hr × Time
⇒ Time = 1.6 km / 24 km/hr
⇒ Time = 0.067 hours
To convert to minutes we need to multiply 60 which gives:
⇒ 0.067 × 60 = 4.02 minutes
Que-8: Convert each of the following speed into m/sec :
(i) 36 km/hr (ii) 81 km/hr (iii) 9 km/hr
Sol: (i) 36 km/hr
Change into m/s multiply it to 5/18
= 36 × (5/18)
= 10 m/s
(ii) 81 km/hr
Change into m/s multiply it to 5/18
= 81 × (5/18)
= 45/2 = 22*(1/2) m/s
(iii) 9 km/hr
Change into m/s multiply it to 5/18
= 9 × (5/18)
= 5/2 = 2*(1/2) m/s
Que-9: Convert each of the following speed into km/hr :
(i) 25 m/sec (ii) 7.5 m/sec (iii) 1 m/sec
Sol: (i) 25 m/s
Change into m/s multiply it to 18/5
= 25 × (18/5)
= 90 km/hr
(ii) 7.5 m/s
Change into m/s multiply it to 18/5
= 7.5 × (18/5)
= 90 km/hr
(iii) 1 m/s
Change into m/s multiply it to 18/5
= 1 × (18/5)
= 18/5 = 3*(3/5) km/hr
Que-10: A train covers 120 m in 5 seconds. What is the speed of the train in km/hr ?
Sol: speed = distance/time
= 120/5
= 24m/sec
= 24×(3600/1000)
= 24×(18/5)
= 432/5
= 86*(2/5) km/hr.
Que-11: A bus is moving at a speed of 84 km/hr. How much distance will it cover in 1 min 45 sec ?
Sol: speed of bus = 84km/hr.
and time = 1min. 45 sec. means 60+45 = 105 seconds.
distance = speed × time
firstly we find speed in m/sec. so , 84km/hr by converting into m/sec .
we get 84 × 5/18 = 23.33 m/sec.
distance = 23.33 × 105 = 2450m
distance = 2.450 km = 2 km 450 m
Que-12: Preeti is going on her moped at a speed of 24 km/hr. How much will she take to cover 720 metres ?
Sol: 24 Kmph = 24 × 5/18 mps
24kmph = 20/3 mps
Time = ( 720 ÷ 20/3 ) seconds
= 720 × 3/20 seconds
= 36 × 3 sec
= 108 seconds
= 1 min 48 sec.
Que-13: A car, running at 45 km/hr, takes 6 hours to complete a journey. At what speed must it travel to complete the journey in 5 hours ?
Sol: Speed of car: 45 km/hr
The time that is taken to complete journey: 6 hours
Distance traveled: Speed x Time
= 45 x 6
= 270 km
Speed needed to complete journey in 5 hours: (Speed x Time)/5
= (45×6)/5
= 270/5
= 54 km/hr.
Que-14: A car covers a certain distance in 40 minutes, if it turns at 54 km/hr. How much time will it take to cover the same distance at a speed of 45 km/hr ?
Sol: Speed = 54 km/hr
Time = 40 min = 40/60 hrs
Distance = speed × time
= 54 × (1/3)
= 18 km
Now speed = 45 km/hr
Time = Distance/speed
= 18/45
= 2/5 = 0.4 hrs
= 40 min.
