Problems/Questions on Speed Distance Time with Solutions/Answer

Problems/Questions on Speed Distance Time is very common nowadays. This topics is very important not for only class study but also for various competitive exam.

  1. Speed = Distance/Time – This tells us how slow or fast an object moves. It describes the distance travelled divided by the time taken to cover the distance.
  2. Speed is directly Proportional to Distance and Inversely proportional to Time. Hence,
  3. Distance = Speed X Time, and
  4. Time = Distance / Speed, as the speed increases the time taken will decrease and vice versa.
  5. To convert from km / hour to m / sec, we multiply by 5 / 18. So, 1 km / hour = 5 / 18 m / sec
  6. To convert from m / sec to km / hour, we multiply by 18 / 5. So, 1 m / sec = 18 / 5 km / hour = 3.6 km / hour
  7. For a certain distance, if the ratio of speeds is a : b, then the ratio of times taken to cover the distance would be b : a

Average Speed

Average Speed = (Total distance traveled)/(Total time taken)

Meeting Point Questions

If two people travel from two points A and B towards each other, and they meet at point P. The total Distance covered by them on the meeting will be AB. The Time taken by both of them to meet will be the same. As the Time is constant, Distances AP and BP will be in the ratio of their Speed. Say that the Distance between A and B is d.

Exercise-11B

Multiple Choice Questions :

Que-1: A speed of 15 m/sec is the same as

(a) 45 km/hr  (b) 48 km/hr  (c) 54 km/hr  (d) 60 km/hr

Sol:   (c) 54 km/hr

Reason:  15 m/s
Change into km/hr multiply by 18/5
we get,
= 15 × (18/5)
= 54 km/hr.

Que-2: A speed of 90 km/hr is the same as

(a) 25 m/sec  (b) 30 m/sec  (c) 36 m/sec   (d) 27 m/sec

Sol:   (a) 25 m/sec

Reason:  90 km/hr
Change into m/sec multiply by 5/18
we get,
= 90 × (5/18)
= 25 m/s.

Que-3: A car covers a distance of 7 km in 5 minutes. Its speed is

(a) 70 km/hr     (b) 63 km/hr      (c) 84 km/hr      (d) 105 km/hr

Sol:    (c) 84 km/hr

Reason:  Distance = 7km
Time = 5 minutes = 5/60 = 1/12 hr.
Speed = Distance/Time
= 7/(1/12)
= 84 km/hr.

Que-4: A motorcyclist travels at 30 m/s. How much distance does he cover in 15 minutes ?

(a) 24 km     (b) 27 km     (c) 30 km      (d) 36 km

Sol:   (b) 27 km

Reason:  Speed = 30 m/s
= 30 × (18/5) = 108 km/hr
Time = 15 min = 15/60 = 1/4 hrs
Distance = Speed × Time
= 108 × (1/4)
= 27 km

Que-5: A motorbikes covers 84 km in 2 hrs 24 min. The speed of the bike is :

(a) 50 km/hr  (b) 45 km/hr  (c) 40 km/hr   (d) 35 km/hr

Sol:   (d) 35 km/hr

Reason:  d = 84
t = 2hr 24min = 2.4 hrs
speed = distance/time
= 84/(2+0.4)
= 84/2.4
= 35 km/hr

Que-6: A car runs at a speed of 90 km/hr. What distance does it cover in 50 minutes ?

(a) 72 km  (b) 75 km  (c) 52 km   (d) 65 km

Sol:    (b) 75 km

Reason:  50 minutes means 50/60 hours = 5/6 hours
so, distance covered by car = speed × time
=> distance covered by car = 90 × 5/6 = 75 km

Que-7: A car is running at 20 m/s. How much distance will it cover in 2 hrs 20 min ?

(a) 175 km      (b) 172 km      (c) 168 km     (d) 165 km

Sol:   (c) 168 km

Reason:  Speed = 20m/s
Distance travelled in 2hours 20minutes = ?
We will convert the time in seconds
1 hour = 3600seconds and 1 minute = 60seconds
2 hours 20 minutes = 2 × 3600 + 20 × 60 = 8400 seconds.
Distance travelled = Speed × Time
= 20 × 8400
= 168000 metres
I km = 1000 metres.
So, 168000/1000 = 168 km

Que-8: Which of the following is the slowest speed ?

(a) 45 km/hr  (b) 10 m/s  (c) 0.9 km/min  (d) all are equal

Sol:     (b) 10 m/s

Reason:  10 m/sec.

Que-9: A car travels at 90 km/hr. How much distance does it cover in 8 second ?

(a) 160m     (b) 200m     (c) 240m       (d) 250m

Sol:   (b) 200 m

Reason:  Speed = 90km/hr
Since time is given in seconds we have to convert the speed to m/s
1 kmph = 5/18 m/s
= 90 × 5/18 = 25 m/s
Speed = Distance / Time
They are asking distance so,
Distance = Speed × Time
= 25 × 8
= 200 m
