Question 6: The culmination of discontent against the British rule came with the Great Revolt of 1857.With reference to this, answer the following questions:
(i) What was the Doctrine of Lapse? Name the queen who became a victim of this policy.
(ii) Mention any three economic causes of the Revolt.
(iii) Mention any four administrative changes made by the British after the Revolt.
Answer :
(i) The Doctrine of Lapse was an annexation policy extensively applied by East India Company in India until 1859. The widowed Rani Laxmi Bai was pensioned and their adopted son, Anand Rao, was not recognised as a lawful successor to the throne under the Doctrine of Lapse. And Jhansi was annexed by British East India Company.
(ii) The peasants suffered due to high revenue demands and the strict revenue collection policy. Artisans and craftsmen were ruined by the large-scale influx of cheap British manufactured goods into India which, in turn, made their hand-made goods uneconomical to produce.
- Ruin of the Mercantile Class.
- Discontent among the Zamindars and a New Land Revenue System.

(iii) British Parliament brought the Government of India Act, 1858, which made the following changes:
- Transferred powers from the East India Company to the Crown.
- A member of British Parliament was made secretary of state of India to exercise powers on behalf of the Crown and was responsible to the British Parliament.
- The Governor General for India was provided with an Executive Council, whose decision he was empowered to override.
Question 7: With reference to first and second phase of the Indian National Movement, answer the following:
(i) What was the objective of the Assertive Nationalists? Mention any two contributions of Bal Gangadhar Tilak.
(ii) Who partitioned Bengal? State any two actual reasons behind the Partition.
(iii) Mention any four methods used by the Early Nationalists.
Answer :
(i) partition of Bengal, (1905), division of Bengal carried out by the British viceroy in India, Lord Curzon, despite strong Indian nationalist opposition. It began a transformation of the Indian National Congress from a middle-class pressure group into a nationwide mass movement.
(ii) The reorganization separated the largely Muslim eastern areas from the largely Hindu western areas. Announced on 19 July 1905 by Lord Curzon, the then Viceroy of India, and implemented on 16 October 1905, it was undone a mere six years later.
The two real motives behind the partition of Bengal was: To curb the radical Bengali nationalists and to weaken the nationalist’s movements. To weaken Bengal, the nerve centre of Indian nationalism and divide the Muslims and Hindus based on religion.
(iii) The Early Nationalists believed in patience and conciliation rather than confrontation, adopting orderly progress and constitutional means to realise their aims. To educate the people, to arouse political consciousness, and to create powerful public opinion in favour of their demands they organised annual sessions
Question 8: The mass phase of the National Movement led to the freedom of India. With reference to this phase, answer the following questions:
(i) What were the causes of the Civil Disobedience Movement? Name the march which marked the beginning of this movement.
(ii) Mention any three causes of the Non Cooperation Movement.
(iii) Mention any four clauses of the Mountbatten Plan.
Answer :
(i) The formation of the Simon Commission, the failure of the demand for Dominion Status, and protests against the arrest of social revolutionaries were the major causes. It was the start of the civil disobedience movement which commenced as Mahatma Gandhi broke the salt law on the coastal town of Dandi on the Arabian Sea on April 5. Dandi March is also known as Namak Satyagrah or Salt Satyagrah.
(ii) (a) The first world war lead to huge increase in defense expenditure and increased taxes. Forced recruitment caused widespread anger. Famine and epidemic badly affected people.This outraged the people.
(b) The Non-cooperation movement was a reaction to the oppressive policies of the British Indian government such as the Rowlatt Act and the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
(c) Indians were disappointed to see the British government adopting repressive measures. In response to it Tilak and Besant started Home Rule movement. The Lucknow Pact had brought the Congress and the Muslim League closer together. The return of the Extremists to the Congress in 1916 gave the Congress a militant character.
(iii) Clauses of the Mountbatten Plan:
(a) To divide British India into India and Pakistan.
(b) The Princely States would be free to join either India or Pakistan.
(c) Bengal and Punjab were to be partitioned provided the Legislative Assemblies of both states voted in favour of partition.

(ii) Mention any four conditions imposed on Germany in the Treaty of Versailles.
(iii) Name the organization established to maintain peace after the First World War. Mention any three of its objectives.

(ii) The Treaty of Versailles held Germany responsible for starting the war and imposed harsh penalties on the Germans, including loss of territory, massive reparations payments and demilitarization
(iii) The League of Nations was an international organization, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, created after the First World War to provide a forum for resolving international disputes
Question 10: The United Nations Organisation was established to maintain peace in the world. With reference to this organization, answer the following questions:
(i) What is the composition of the Security Council?
(ii) Mention any three functions of the International Court of Justice.
(iii) What is the full form of UNESCO? Mention any three of its functions.
Answer :
(i) The Security Council shall consist of fifteen Members of the United Nations. The Republic of China, France, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the United States of America shall be permanent members of the Security Council.
(ii) (a) Voluntary Jurisdiction: Its jurisdiction covers all cases which the parties at dispute refer to it by mutual consent. One party alone may refer the dispute to the Court. If the other party undertakes to defend itself in a case brought before it, the Court interprets it as consent to the reference.
(b) Evolving procedures for peaceful Settlement of Disputes: At any stage of the disputes the Court may recommend appropriate procedures or methods of settlement. It may also recommend terms of settlement.
(c) Advisory Opinion: The International Court of Justice gives advisory opinion on any matter of international law as and when requested by the General Assembly and the Security Council.
(iii) UNESCO stand for – United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

This was a very good and helpful for me to understand this question and answer .but there was some mistakes I found in sec B ,. Q 9 (1). There is no answer provided there .plz fix that problem.
