(i) The Assam Movement (also Anti-Foreigners Agitation) (1979–1985) was a popular uprising in Assam, India, that demanded the Government of India to detect, disenfranchise and deport illegal aliens.

Question 4: Examine the role of Indira Gandhi in the creation of Bangladesh in 1971.
Answer: Bangladesh was created by the support of India because: 1. West Pakistan did not allow Awami League an East Pakistani Party to form the government despite winning all the seats. 2. East Pakistanis rebelled against and were suppressed by the army of West Pakistan resulting from large-scale migration into India.
Question 5: What problems did Indian women experience, according to the Towards Equality Report of 1974?
Answer: The report proved to be an “eye opener” for women’s condition by talking about development and democracy from gender perspective. It brought to the forefront the issues of declining sex ratio (missing women). It led to women-sensitive policy-making in India and stress on girls’ education.
Question 6: Define Britain and France’s policy of Appeasement towards Germany and Italy between 1935 and 1939. Give any three examples of Appeasement.
Answer: The policy of Appeasement was the conciliatory approach of making an admission to the adversary nation to dodge war. It was an approach followed by Britain and France during 1935–39. This approach permitted Hitler to abuse terms of the deal of Versailles so he would do nothing more terrible.
The prime example is Britain’s policy toward Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany in the 1930s.
Question 7: Account for the Communist victory over the KMT in 1949.
Answer: The Communists were able to mobilize a massive army of peasants with their program of radical land reform and gradually began winning open battles against the KMT. In 1948 and 1949 the Communist People’s Liberation Army won three major campaigns that forced the Nationalist government to retreat to Taiwan.
Question 8: What were the main grievances of the black Africans against the white settlers in Kenya?
Answer: To many early explorers and administrators, the cool climate and absence of populations over large swathes of the Highlands, made it a uniquely attractive area for European settlement in sub-tropical Africa.
The White Highlands were depopulated of white settlers before independence with much of the land being sold to Africans under the Million acre settlement scheme.
