Que-1: Without actual division, find which of the following fractions are terminating decimals.

(i) 9/25   (ii) 7/12   (iii) 13/16   (iv) 25/128   (v) 9/50   (vi) 121/125 (vii) 19/55   (viii) 37/78   (ix) 23/80   (x) 19/30

Solution- (i) 9/25 = 0.36
So, it is terminating decimal.

(ii) 7/12 = 0.583333…
So, it is not a terminating decimal.

(iii) 13/16 = 0.8125
So, it is terminating decimal.

(iv) 25/128 = 0.195
So, it is terminating decimal.

(v) 9/50 = 0.18
So, it is terminating decimal.

(vi) 121/125 = 0.968
So, it is terminating decimal.

(vii) 19/55 = 0.36
So, it is terminating decimal.

Que-2: Convert each  …… lowest terms :

(i) 0.65   (ii) 1.08   (iii) 0.075    (iv) 2.016    (v) 1.732

Solution- (i) 0.65 = 0.65/100 = 13/20.
(ii) 1.08 = 108/100 = 27/25.
(iii) 0.075 = 75/1000 = 3/40.
(iv) 2.016 = 2016/1000 = 252/125.
(v) 1.732 = 1732/1000 = 433/250.

Que-3: Convert each  ……..  a decimal :

(i) 1/8   (ii) 3/32    (iii) 44/9    (iv) 11/24    (v) 12/13    (vi) 27/44 (vii) 2*(5/12)    (viii) 1*(31/55)

Solution- (i) 1/8 = 0.125.
(ii) 3/32 = 0.09375.
(iii) 44/9 = 4.8
(iv) 11/24 = 0.4583
(v) 12/13 = 0.923076
(vi) 27/44 = 0.6136
(vii) 2*(5/12) = 29/12 = 2.416
(viii) 1*(31/55) = 86/55 = 1.563

Que-4: Express 15/56 as a decimal, correct to four decimals places.

Solution- 15/56 = 0.2689

Que-5: Express 13/34 as a decimal, correct to three decimal places.

Solution- 13/34 = 0.382

Que-6: By actual division, show that :

(i) 11/9 = 1.2    (ii) 43/11 = 3.90    (iii) 107/55 = 2.37    (iv) 21/55 = 0.381

Solution-(i) 11 ÷ 9 = 1 with a remainder of 2
11.0 ÷ 9 = 1.2 with a remainder of 2
11/9 ​= 1.2222… = 1.2
11/9 ​≈ 1.2
So by actual division, 11/9​ is approximately equal to 1.2.

(ii) 43 ÷ 11 = 3 with a remainder of 10
43.0 ÷ 11 = 3.9 with a remainder of 1
43/11 ​= 3.909090… = 3.90
43/11 ​≈ 3.90
So by actual division, 43/11​ is approximately equal to 3.90.

(iii) 107 ÷ 45 = 2 with a remainder of 17
107.0 ÷ 45 = 2.37 with a remainder of 35
107/45 ​= 2.3777… = 2.37
107/45 ​≈ 2.37
So by actual division, 107/45​ is approximately equal to 2.37.

(iv) 21 ÷ 55 = 0.3 with a remainder of 45
21.0 ÷ 55 = 0.381 with a remainder of 1
21/55 ​= 0.3818181… = 0.381
21/55 ​≈ 0.381
So by actual division, 21/55​ is approximately equal to 0.381.

Que-7: Express each of the following as a vulgar fraction in simplest form :

(i) 0.5   (ii) 0.43    (iii) 0.158    (iv) 1.3    (v) 4.17    (vi) 0.12   (vii) 0.136   (viii) 1.57

Solution- (i) 0.5 = 5/10 = 1/2
(ii) 0.43 = 43/100
(iii) 0.158 = 158/1000.
(iv) 1.3 = 13/10
(v) 4.17 = 417/100
(vi) 0.12 = 12/100 = 3/25.
(vii) 0.136 = 136/1000 = 34/250
(viii) 1.57 = 157/100.
