Summary: The Glove and the Lions
Here is the summary of poem “The Glove and the Lions ” composed by Leigh Hunt. In the opening of the poem a King Francis, who is watching his lions fighting in the barricading of stadium for sport.
King Sits in The Stadium With His Companions
The king sits above the stadium, with the company of nobles and good looking ladies. Among these nobles men and women Mr Count de Lorge, who longingly signs for one particular lady there. All of them were enjoying the moment of fighting between two lions.
King Warns to Audience Not to go in the Barricade
When poem in progress the narrator describes the scene as a brave show, with the brave king presiding over the angry lions battling below. The lions rampage and roar, cruelly biting and clawing at one another in a fearful fight. Bloody foam releasing from their mouths flew till the barricades enclosing the pit. Shocking by the violence, King Francis comments that the audience are better off watching from their seats than going down in the barricade.
The Lady Decides to Test His Love
The lady whom Count de Lorge loves hears the king’s comments. She is described as very beautiful, with an unchanging smile and bright, intelligent eyes. Confidently believing her lover De Lorge to be the bravest man, she decides to test his love and win glory for herself. With the king, nobles, and ladies looking on, she deliberately drops her glove into the barricade of lions, giving a chance of challenge De Lorge to rescue it.
The Lover Jumps into the Barricading and Bounce Back
The lover, De Lorge, bows to the lady, then suddenly jumps into the barricading of stadium where lions are fighting. Quickly and Efficiently he bounce back out, raising glove in his hand. But rather than gently return the glove to prove his love, he angrily throws it right in the lady’s face. King Francis approves of De Lorge’s reaction, declaring that it was not true love, but the lady’s ego and pride that led her to set such a dangerous challenge.
Conclusion
The poem vividly tells the story of a ego of a proud lady who tests her lover’s bravery by throwing her glove into a pit of dangerous cruel lion. But when he succeeds in the challenge and angrily throws the glove back at her, the king praises the lover and blames the lady’s pride and ego.
