Question 11: What is meant by ‘biocontrol’? Explain how Trichoderma and Baculovirus act as biocontrol agents.
Answer: It is used to increase crop yield and production. The principle used in biological control is predation and parasitism. It kills the insect without causing any effects to human health—some of the microbes used as biocontrol agents are the Bacillus thuringiensis, Trichoderma, Baculoviruses, and Nucleopolyhedrovirus.
Question 12: What are linked genes? Give a schematic representation of a test cross between a whiteeyed female Drosophila and a red-eyed male Drosophila.
Answer: The two or more genes are said to be linked when they are located on the same chromosome and cannot segregate independently as they are inherited together. The linked genes are arranged linearly.
The cross of white eyed female with red eyed male gives red eyed females and white eyed males. Rarely this cross may give all white eyed females and red eyed males. This results from non-seperation of two homologous X chromosomes during anaphase I of meiosis.
Question 13: Alcoholic drinks are produced by fermentation, but some beverages are produced through an additional process of distillation. How do the distilled and undistilled alcoholic beverages differ in their quality and composition? Explain by giving one example each for a distilled alcoholic beverage and an undistilled alcoholic beverage.
Answer: The distillation process concentrates the alcohol content of fermented drinks by removing water and other components, making them stronger. All forms of liquor and spirits are distilled alcohol and typically have higher alcohol by volume (ABV) and alcohol proof than undistilled alcohols.
Question 14: Consider the situation, where a variety of birds depend upon a big tree for their survival. The birds in turn are hosts for the different parasites surviving on them. Draw a pyramid of number to represent the above situation.
Answer:
In the above pyramid the population of insects is more than the tree; therefore, the size of pyramid increases, but the number of small birds is lesser than the insects. The pyramid size becomes narrow. Further, big birds are lesser than small birds. So the size of pyramid becomes narrower.
Question 15: Explain any three ex situ methods of conservation of biodiversity.
Answer: It is the methods of conserving all the living species in the artful habitats that reflect their natural living habitats. Examples of ex-situ conservation of biodiversity include aquariums, botanical gardens, cryopreservation, DNA banks, zoos, etc.
