D. LONG ANSWER QUESTIONS

(Page-97)

Question 1. What do you know about growth hormones of plants? Explain the effects of any one hormone.

Answer : Many hormones required for cell growth, such as auxins, gibberellins, brassinosteroids, ethylene, jasmonates, salicylic acid, strigolactones and cytokinins which able to accelerate or promote growth, but, some hormone-like abscisic acid has an adverse effect on growth which increases seed dormancy by inhibiting cell

Question 2. Explain the geotropic movement in plants with the help of an experiment.

Answer : It is the movement of plant parts in response to gravity. The roots grow towards gravity and are hence called positively geotropic. The stem, on the other hand, is negatively geotropic

Question 3. Explain the following by giving reasons :

(i) Tips of the shoots move toward light.

(ii) The leaflets of Mimosa pudica droop on being touched by a finger or an object.

(iii) The tendrils of a climber grows around the support

(iv) Roots move towards soil in the ground.

Answer :

(i) When growing plant shoot tip detects light a hormone called auxin is synthesised in the shoot tip which is sensitive to light. Auxin diffuses towards the shady side of the stem. It stimulates the growth of cells on the shady side of the plant which causes bending of the plant to the other side

(ii) This sensitive leaf of Mimosa pudica reacts to a stimulus when touched because there is more pressure at that point. As a result, the leaves close. It is caused by a change in turgor pressure between the leaf bases of the petiole’s base. As a result, when touched, the entire leaf droops down.

(iii) The tendrils are sensitive to touch. When they come in contact with any support, the part of the tendril in contact with the object does not grow rapidly as the part of the tendril away from the object. This causes the tendril to circle around the object and thus cling to it.

(iv)  The roots of plants are the part which grows under the soil. The roots of the plants shows the movement called as geotropism. This is the property by which the roots move towards the soil. The other property of the roots is to move towards the water is known as hydrotropism
