Miscellaneous Numericals on Diffraction of Light
Que-7: A narrow slit of width 0.3 mm is illuminated normally by a parallel beam of light of wavelength 6 x 10^-7 m. The Fraunhofer diffraction pattern is obtained on a screen placed in the focal plane of a convex lens of focal length 25 cm. The lens is placed quite close to the slit. Find the width of central maximum on the screen.
Ans- sin θ = λ/e
θ = λ/e
if x is the distance of first min to central max and focus of lens is f then
θ = x/f
=> x = f.θ
and width of central max = 2x = 2f θ = 2f λ/e
= 2 x 25 x 10^-2 x 6 x 10^-7 / 0.3 x 10^-3
= 1.0 mm
Que-8: A parallel light beam of wavelength 6000 Å passes through a slit 0.2 mm wide and forms a diffraction pattern on a screen 1.0 m away from the slit. Find the width of the central maximum on the screen. What would be the width of this maximum, if the apparatus be immersed in water of refractive index 4/3?
Ans- width of central maxima = 2x = 2D θ = 2D λ/e
= 2 x 1 x 6000 x 10^-10 / 0.2 x 10^-3
= 6.0 mm
If apparatus dipped in water
then 2x = 6.0 x 3 / 4 = 4.5 mm
