Answer :

(i)The scene takes place in a court of justice in Venice. Portia is here (in the court of justice) disguised as Dr. Balthazar (a doctor of law) to plead the case for
Antonio.

(ii) Mercy is compared to gentle rain showered from heaven. This comparison is suitable or more apt because mercy also flows like a drop in the hearts of the person

(iii) However, Portia says that the person who grants mercy is also blessed. This is because mercy is a characteristic of God, and the person who grants it is acting with the spirit and majesty of God. Thus mercy is twice blessed: it blesses the one who gets the merciful treatment and the one who grants it.

(iv) A Sceptre is a symbol of a ruler’s earthly / worldly power – it inspires fear and dread/ symbol of awe and majesty

: It means that mercy is greater than the king’s sword. Portia says that mercy creates love for one while the king’s sword only creates fear and that love is greater than fear so mercy is greater than the king’s sword

He gave her a shove. But she did not move, rather she let herself be moved only by him and nothing else. They edged away from her; they would not look at her. She felt them go away.

(i) She is Margot This story is on Venus

(ii) The everyday life on this planet differs from life on Earth because it is continuously raining on Venus for seven years due to the dense clouds. The Sun is visible only once in seven years, and that also only for an hour or two. The people there lived underground because of the water on the ground everywhere.

(iii) Because they hated Margot as she would never play with them, not sing songs with them and if they tagged her and ran she stood blinking after them and did not follow

(iv) They recall Margot who is still confined in the closest . Read the extract given below and answer the questions that follow:

An angry athlete is an athlete who will make mistakes, as any coach will tell you. I was no exception. On the first of my three qualifying jumps, I leaped from several inches beyond the take-off board for a foul.

(i) When and where is this narrative set?

(ii) What reason does the narrator Jesse Owens give for the heightened nationalistic feelings at this time?

(iii) In which event had Owens been confident of winning a gold medal? Why?

(iv) What had made Owens angry enough to make mistakes? Name Owens’ rival who approached him at this point.

Answer :

(i) This story is set in the time of the Berlin Olympic Games of 1936.

(ii) Because Hitler childishly insisted that his performers were members of a ‘master race’, heightened nationalistic feelings at this time were at an all time high.

(iii) Jessie Owens gained, sweated and disciplined himself for six years. He had already made a world record in the long jump in the last year. So he expected to win the gold medal easily this time.

(iv)  At the time of broad-jump trials Jessie Owens was started to see a tall boy hitting the .pit at almost 26 feet on his practice leaps Jessie felt angry when he was told that Hitler had kept him under wraps obviously to win the jump with.hirn. Jessie was disturbed to think if Luz Long won, it would add some new support to the Nazis’ Aryan-superiority theory. Jessie was so disturbed that he made mistakes in his trial jumps

Question 5:

Read the extract given below and answer the questions that follow:

Exceeding peace had made Ben Adhem bold,

And to the presence in the room he said,

“What writest thou?”

(i) To whom did Ben Adhem address these words? Mention the context in which he said this.

(ii) What was the ‘presence’ doing in Ben Adhem’s room? What did the presence say in response to Ben Adhem’s question?

(iii) What did Abou Ben Adhem say after this exchange? How did the presence respond to his words?

(iv) Describe the events of the following night.

Answer :

(i) Ben Adhem say these word to Angel . the context in which he said this was exceeding peace had made the room full of moon light.

(ii) In these lines the poet tells us that one night Abou Ben Adhem awoke from a peaceful dream and saw an angel in his room. The room was more brightened by the presence of the angel. The angel was writing something in a book of gold

(iii) Abou Ben Adhem asked the angel what she was writing in the book. The angel responded by saying that she was writing the names of those people who love God

(iv) One night when Adhem was awakened from a deep dream of peace, he saw that his room was filled with moonlight making it appear rich and bright like a lily in bloom. He also saw an angel writing something in a book of gold. A deep dream of peace shows his meditative state of mind.

Question 6:

Read the extract given below and answer the questions that follow:

Cheering on all the young women and men

Then the final event of the day was approaching

The last race about to begin.

(i) Where had the ‘young women and men’ come from? What had brought them together?

(iii) What happened to the youngest athlete half way through the race? How did he deal with the situation?

(iv) Describe the manner in which the race ends.

Answer :

 (i) The young men and women had come from all over the world. The Special Olympics for the disabled had brought them together. They had prepared themselves for the event by training for many weeks and months before the event was held

(ii) The last event of the day was the hundred metres race. Nine athletes were participating in the event. The signal they were waiting for was the sound of the starter’s gun.

(iii) Halfway through the race, the youngster athlete stumbled and staggered. He then fell on his knees to the ground. He responded by giving a cry of frustration and anguish as his dream and efforts had failed. … On seeing the youngest athlete fall down, the other athletes stopped running

(iv)  The race ended with the nine runners in the Special Olympics event holding hands and walking to the finishing line together. The race which was supposed to be a competition was reduced to a mere walk in the end delivering a message of collaboration and cooperation

  2. I think in Section A Question 5 correct answer will be (a), in the book, in about narrator section (last line, second last paragraph) it is written
