Ch-8 Five Kingdom Classification

(Page-80)

Questions 1. Name two organisms kept under the following kingdoms:

(i) Monera–  Unicellular and colonial–including the true bacteria (eubacteria) and cyanobacteria (blue-green algae).

(ii) Protista– Amoeba, Paramecium

(iii) Fungi– sac fungi, Eomycota.

(iv) Plantae–  cactus , rose.

(v) Animalia–  cow, spider

Questions 2. Distinguish between the following kingdoms

(i) Monera and Protista
Monera Protista
Examples Bacillus, Mycobacteria, Sphorobacter. Euglena, red algae, green algae.
Habitat Found everywhere. Some found in the aquatic areas and some in shady places and moist lands.
(ii) Protista and Fungi
Protista Fungi
The protists are invisible to the naked eye Fungus is obviously evident
Protists can eat almost everything Fungi can only eat saprophytic or heterotrophic foods
Protists are unicellular creatures Fungi are organisms having a large number of cells
(iii) Plantae and Animalia.
Plants Animals
Plants contain chlorophyll. Animals do not contain chlorophyll.
Plants can make their own food and hence, are autotrophic in nature. Animals cannot prepare their own food and hence, are heterotrophic in nature.

Questions 3. Match the items in Column A with those in Column B:

Column A Column B
(a) Bacterium (i) A plant formed by algae and fungi
(b) Fungus (ii) One-celled prokaryotic organism
(c) Lichen (iii) A plant with nuclei but no chlorophyll
(d) Algae (iv) Green autotrophic plants

Answer

Column A Column B
(a) Bacterium (ii) One-celled prokaryotic organism
(b) Fungus (iii) A plant with nuclei but no chlorophyll
(c) Lichen (i) A plant formed by algae and fungi
(d) Algae (iv) Green autotrophic plants

Questions 4. Answer the following

(i) Why has Euglena been classified as a plant as well as an animal?

Ans: Euglena is a claimed to be a plant by botanists because it contains chloroplast and obtains its food through photosynthesis. On the other hand, zoologists consider it to be an animal as its body is covered by pellicle, it bears myonemes and reproduces by binary fission.

(ii) Who proposed the five kingdom classification?

Ans: Robert Whittaker

(iii) Name the five kingdoms proposed in the five kingdom classification.

Ans: Living things are divided into five kingdoms: animal, plant, fungi, protist and monera. Living things are divided into five kingdoms: animal, plant, fungi, protist and monera.

(iv) Which of the following groups of organisms contain chlorophyll?

(a) Bacteria

(b) Fungi

(c) Algae

(d) Mosses

(e) Flowering Plants

Ans:–(c) Algae,(d) Mosses,(e) Flowering Plants

(v) Give the important features of following kingdoms :

(a) Monera—-They contain 70S ribosomes. The DNA is naked and is not bound by a nuclear membrane.

(b) Fungi : —Fungi are eukaryotic, non-vascular, non-motile and heterotrophic organisms. They may be unicellular or filamentous.

(c) Protista : —They are eukaryotic, which means they have a nucleus. Most have mitochondria. They can be parasites. They all prefer aquatic or moist environments.

(d) Animalia : —They are multicellular organisms which do not possess chlorophyll. They are eukaryotic organisms. Cell wall is absent. Mode of nutrition is heterotrophic i.e. they depend on other organisms for food.
