Question 1. Define the terms:

(a) Life Sciences

(b) Human Biology

(c) Agriculture

(d) Anthropology

(e) Biometric

Answer:

(a) Life Sciences : A branch of science (as biology, medicine, and sometimes anthropology or sociology) that deals with living things and life processes.

(b) Human Biology : Human biology is the study of all aspects of the human organism including evolution, genetics, ecology, anatomy and physiology, development, anthropology, and nutrition, among others.

(c) Agriculture : Agriculture is the art and science of cultivating the soil, growing crops, and raising livestock. It includes the preparation of plant and animal products for people to use and their distribution to markets.

(d) Anthropology : Anthropologists are people that practice anthropology, which is the study of humanity. Basically they want to figure out what makes humans human.

(e) Biometric : A measurable physical characteristic or personal behavioral trait used to recognize the identity, or verify the claimed identity, of an applicant. Facial images, fingerprints, and iris scan samples are all examples of biometrics.

Question 2.  What is biology ? Name and define its major branches.

Answer:

Biology is the study of living beings, all plants and animals including humans. So Biology had flourished greatly in ancient India during 2500 B.C. to 650 B.C. Therefore The roots of biology can be traced back to pre-historic periods, when primitive man lived in jungles and caves. Hence Biology has slowly grown through the ages, but developed very fast in the 20th century and is showing signs of even faster growth in the 21st century.

Three major branches of biology are microbiology, zoology, and botany. Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms, zoology is the study of animals, and botany is the study of plants.

Question 3. How does biology help us in leading a healthier life?

Answer:

The knowledge of biology has greatly helped us in the field of human health. Therefore helps us to understand the cause of many diseases. We are able to identify various micro-organisms that cause diseases in man. Hence We can study their mode of living and the different ways in which they spread diseases. Therefore understanding of disease-causing microorganisms has led to the development of new drugs, both natural and synthetic drugs that can kill these organisms.

Question 4. A farmer and a housewife may have never studied biology, yet both of them know some of its general principles through experience. State any two principles which they know.

Answer:

A farmer, although has never studied biology, knows by his experience how to increase his produce. He knows how to plough and plant crops and select good quality seeds for sowing. That former also familiar with various methods of irrigation. He knows the technique of cross-breeding and removing weak and unwanted plants and cultivating improved varieties at the right time.

A housewife, by using her experience knows which fruit or vegetable to grow and for how much time. She also knows the nutritional values of various foodstuffs. That housewife adopts various principles of maintaining hygiene at home. Hence She knows to tame some useful animals like cow, goat and dog for her maximum benefit.

Question 5. Distinguish between the following pairs of sciences:

(a) Zoology and Entomology

(b) Genetics and Embryology

(c) Botany and Mycology

(d) Space Biology and Exobiology

(e) Biotechnology and Bioinformatics

(f) Embryology and Immunology

(g) Ichthyology and pisciculture

Answer:

(a) Zoology is the study of animals, whereas Entomology is the study of insects.

(b) Genetics is the science of transmission of body characteristics from parents to offspring, whereas Embryology is the study of formation and development of embryos of plants and animals.

(c) Botany is the study of plants, whereas Mycology is the study of fungi.

(d) Space Biology is the study of survival problems of living things in outer space, whereas Exobiology is the study of life elsewhere in the universe.

(e) Biotechnology is the use of living cells or micro-organisms in industry and technology, whereas Bioinformatics is the management and analysis of biological information stored in databases.

(f) Embryology deals with the origin, growth and development of an embryo . the study of embryo is also known as embryology. Immunology is the study of the immune system and is a very important branch of the medical and biological sciences. The immune system protects us from infection through various lines of defence.

(g)  Ichthyology is a branch of zoology which deals with the study of fishes. – Herpetology: Herpetology is a branch of zoology which deals with the study of reptiles and amphibians. – Pisciculture: Pisciculture is the cultivation of fishes. Pisciculture is also known as fish farming.

Question 1.  Do you think Biology can help in further increasing the yield of food? If so, how?

Answer :

Yes, Biology can help in further increasing the yield of food. Yet new varieties of plants and new breeds of cattle and poultry, etc. are being developed with the knowledge of biology. Therefore science has also increased our knowledge of diseases of plants and animals, and how to cure them.
