Long Answer Questions on Common Laboratory Apparatus and Equipments
Que-1: Answer the following questions in brief:
(i) Why is chemistry known as an experimental science?
(ii) Why are most of the apparatus made of glass?
Ans- (i) Chemistry is known as an experimental science because its principles and laws are based on practical experiments and observations. Chemists perform experiments in laboratories to study the properties, composition, and reactions of substances, and conclusions are drawn from the results obtained through these experiments.
(ii) Most laboratory apparatus are made of glass because glass is transparent, allowing us to see the substances and reactions taking place inside. It is also resistant to many chemicals, does not react easily with most substances, and can withstand high temperatures, especially borosilicate glass. Additionally, glass is easy to clean and shape into different types of equipment.
Que-2: List any five precautions to be taken while performing an experiment in a chemistry laboratory.
Ans- Here are five precautions to be taken while performing an experiment in a chemistry laboratory:
(i)Always wear a lab coat, safety goggles, and gloves to protect yourself from chemicals and spills.
(ii)Never taste or directly smell any chemical; use the proper method (like wafting) if instructed to smell a substance.
(iii)Do not mix chemicals unless instructed by the teacher or the experiment procedure.
(iv)Handle hot apparatus and chemicals carefully, using holders or tongs when necessary.
(v)Keep the laboratory clean and dry, and wash your hands thoroughly after completing the experiment.
Que-3: Label the marked equipments and apparatus in the diagram given below.

Ans- 1.Glass tube or delivery tube
2.Round bottom flask
3.Wire gauze
4.Tripod stand
5.Bunsen burner
6.Glass jar
7.Beaker
