Long Answer Questions on Force
Que-1: What do you mean by the gravitational force ? Give an example to illustrate it.
Ans- The gravitational force is the force of attraction between any two masses in the universe. Every object having mass attracts every other object. This force is always attractive in nature and acts along the line joining the centers of the two bodies. On the Earth, gravitational force is the force by which the Earth attracts objects towards its centre. This is why all objects fall downwards when dropped. For example, When we throw a ball upward, it rises for some time, slows down, and then falls back to the ground. This happens because the Earth’s gravitational force pulls the ball downward.
Que-2: When you apply the brakes, a bicycle stops and the rims of its wheels become hot. Explain the reason.
Ans- When brakes are applied on a bicycle, the brake pads press tightly against the rims of the wheels. This produces a large amount of friction between the brake pads and the moving rims. Due to this friction, the motion of the wheel is opposed, which causes the bicycle to slow down and finally come to a stop. At the same time, the kinetic energy of the moving bicycle is converted into heat energy because of friction. This heat produced makes the rims of the wheels become hot. Thus, the bicycle stops and the rims become hot due to the frictional force between the brake pads and the wheel rims, which converts mechanical energy into heat energy.
Que-3: The eraser gets smaller and smaller as you use it more and more. Explain the reason.
Ans- When we use an eraser to rub out pencil marks from paper, the eraser is rubbed against the rough surface of the paper. Due to this rubbing, a force of friction acts between the eraser and the paper. Because of this friction, small particles of the eraser are continuously worn off during use. As these tiny pieces get detached and fall away, the size of the eraser gradually decreases. The more we use the eraser, the more material is rubbed off, and hence the eraser becomes smaller and smaller. Thus, the eraser gets smaller with use due to wear and tear caused by the force of friction between the eraser and the paper.
Que-4: It is difficult to open an inkpot with greasy or oily hands. Explain.
Ans- It is difficult to open an inkpot with greasy or oily hands because oil or grease reduces the force of friction between our fingers and the surface of the inkpot lid . Normally, when we try to open an inkpot, the friction between our fingers and the lid helps us to get a firm grip so that we can apply enough force to turn it. But when our hands are greasy or oily, a thin slippery layer of oil comes between the fingers and the lid , which makes the surfaces smoother and greatly reduces friction . Due to this reduced friction, our fingers slip over the lid instead of gripping it firmly , making it difficult to apply the required turning force . Hence, it becomes difficult to open an inkpot with greasy or oily hands.
Que-5: It is difficult to walk on a wet road. Explain.
Ans- It is difficult to walk on a wet road because water reduces the force of friction between our feet (or shoes) and the surface of the road . Normally, while walking, friction between our feet and the ground provides the necessary gripthat helps us move forward without slipping. But when the road is wet, a thin layer of water forms between the foot and the road surface , which makes the surface smooth and reduces friction . Due to this reduced friction, our feet do not get a proper grip on the road and tend to slip easily , making it difficult and unsafe to walk. Therefore, walking on a wet road becomes difficult because of reduced friction .
Que-6: A body needs a force F1, just to start motion on a surface, a force F2, to continue its motion and a force F3 to roll on the surface. What is (i) the static friction (ii) sliding friction and (iii) rolling friction? State whether F2, is equal, less than or greater than (a) F1 and (b) F3.
Ans- (i) Since F1 is needed to start the motion which means it behaves like static friction.
So, Static Friction → F1
(ii) Since F2 is needed to continue the motion which means it behaves like sliding friction.
So, Sliding Friction → F2
(iii) Since F3 is needed to roll on the surface which means it must be rolling friction.
So, Rolling Friction → F3
(a) Since F1 is static friction and F2 is sliding friction and as static friction is greater than sliding friction hence, F2 is less than F1.
(b) Since F3 is rolling friction and F2 is sliding friction and as sliding friction is greater than rolling friction hence, F2 is greater than F3.
Que-7: Friction is a necessity and also acts as an evil. Explain.
Ans- Friction is both a necessity and an evil because it has useful effects as well as undesirable consequences. There are a lot of examples to justify the statement.
Friction as a Necessity (Useful Effects) :
(i) Helps in walking – Without friction between our feet and the ground, we would slip and fall.
(ii) Enables writing – Friction between pen/pencil and paper allows us to write.
(iii) Stops vehicles – Brakes work due to friction between brake pads and wheels.
(iv) Objects can be held – We can hold and grip things because of friction between our fingers and the object.
Friction as an Evil (Harmful Effects) :
(i) Wears out machines – Continuous rubbing causes wear and tear in machine parts.
(ii) Reduces efficiency – Friction converts useful mechanical energy into heat, lowering efficiency.
(iii) Causes overheating – Moving parts in engines and machines heat up due to friction.
(iv) Makes movement harder – Extra force is needed to overcome friction while moving heavy objects.
So, from above examples it is visible that Friction is essential for many daily activities, but it also causes damage and energy loss, which is why it is considered both a necessity and an evil.
