Summary of Act-2 Scene-1 in Macbeth Line by Line
Macbeth Act 2, Scene 1 takes place in the castle of Macbeth, late at night. The scene features Banquo and his son Fleance walking in the torch-lit area discussing the witches’ prophecies and their uneasy feelings before Macbeth enters the scene.
Banquo’s Disturbance
In Act-2 scen-1 Banquo expresses his restlessness and “cursed thoughts,” revealing that he’s had nightmares about the witches’ prophecy. He speaks with Macbeth, but Macbeth falsely claims he has forgotten the prophecies and that he is not thinking about them.
Hallucination of Macbeth
Macbeth is now alone, He sees a vision of a dagger floating in the air, its handle pointing toward him. He debates whether the dagger is a “dagger of the mind” or a real, “fatal vision” guiding him to kill Duncan. He sees blood on the blade and realizes the hallucination is a product of his own guilty conscience.
The Sight for Murder
Now Macbeth accepts that the dagger is an illusion and resolves to commit the murder, he hears a bell. This is the signal from Lady Macbeth that the king’s two guards have been drugged and are now asleep, meaning it is fit and best time to proceed with the assassination.
