Introduction

  • A share is one of a finite number of portions in the capital of a company.
  • The person who subscribe in shares is called a share holder.
  • The profit distributed by the company among shareholders is called dividend.

Types of shares – There are two types of shares namely Common and Preferred
The common shares are also called Equity shares.

Important Definitions –

  1. The amount invested to start a company is called the capital stock.
  2. Face Value(F.V) or Nominal Value(N.V) is the original value printed on the share.
  3. Market Value(M.V) is the price at which the share is bought or sold in the market.

Important Notes –

  1. If the market value of a share is the same as it’s nominal value , the share is said to at par.
  2. If the market value of share is more than it’s face value , the share is said to at above par or at premium.
  3. If the market value of share is less than it’s face value , the share is said to be below par or at a discount.
  4. The dividend is always calculated on the face value and not on the market value.
  5. The dividend is expressed as a percentage of the nominal value of the share.
  6. The shares are generally of two types:
    (i) Preferred shares
    (ii) Common or ordinary shares

Important Formulas –

  1. Investment = Number of shares × Market Value of 1 share
  2. Number of shares bought = Sum invested/(M.V of 1 share)
  3. Number of shares bought = Total dividend/(Dividend on 1 share)
  4. Number of shares bought = Total Income/(Income on 1 share)
  5. Income = Number of shares × rate of dividend × F.V
  6. F.V = Face value = Nominal value = N.V
  7. Return % = Income Profit %
