                                                     Short Answer Questions on Matter

Que-1: Define matter. What is its composition?

Ans- Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. It is composed of tiny particles called atoms. Each atom contains protons and neutrons in its nucleus, with electrons moving around the nucleus.

Que-2: Name the three states of matter.

Ans- The three states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas.

Que-3: What is a molecule?

Ans- A molecule is the smallest particle of a substance that can exist independently and still retain the chemical properties of that substance. It is formed when two or more atoms chemically bond together.

Que-4: Mention one example each of a monoatomic and a diatomic molecule.

Ans- An example of a monoatomic molecule is helium (He).
An example of a diatomic molecule is oxygen (O₂).

Que-5: What do you mean by inter-molecular spacing?

Ans- Inter-molecular spacing refers to the space or distance between the molecules of a substance. It is the gap that exists between one molecule and another. The amount of inter-molecular spacing varies in different states of matter—being smallest in solids, larger in liquids, and largest in gases.

Que-6: What do you mean by inter-molecular forces?

Ans- Inter-molecular forces are the forces of attraction between the molecules of a substance. These forces hold the molecules together and determine the physical state of matter. They are strongest in solids, weaker in liquids, and weakest in gases.

Que-7: What are the forces of cohesion and adhesion ?

Ans-Cohesion is the force of attraction between molecules of the same substance. For example, water molecules attracting other water molecules.
Adhesion is the force of attraction between molecules of different substances. For example, water molecules sticking to glass.

Que-8: State three characteristics of molecules of matter which determine its solid, liquid and gaseous state.

Ans- The three characteristics of molecules that determine whether matter is solid, liquid, or gas are the intermolecular spacing (distance between molecules), the intermolecular forces of attraction, and the kinetic energy of the molecules.

Que-9: The molecules in a substance are in motion. What type of path do they follow?

Ans- The molecules in a substance move in a random or zigzag path.
