What is Linear Equations

The linear equations in one variable is an equation which is expressed in the form of ax+b = 0, where a and b are two integers, and x is a variable and has only one solution.

How to Solve Linear Equations

  • Same number can be added / subtracted to both side of equations
  • Each side of the equation can be multiplied / divided  by same number

Multiple Choice Questions :

Que-1: 5 less than thrice x is

(a) 5-3x     (b) 3x-5      (c) 3x/5      (d) 5+3x

Sol: (b) 3x-5

Reason: Let the number be x
thrice a number = 3x
5 less than is
3x-5.

Que-2: if 5x+8 = -4, then 3x = ?
(a) -5/12      (b) -15/12       (c) -12/5      (d) 12/5

Sol: (c) -12/5

Reason: 5x+8 = -4
5x = -4-8
x = -12/5.

Que-3: If 3m-8 = -4, then m = ?
(a) -3/4      (b) 3/4       (c) -4/3      (d) 4/3

Sol: (d) 4/3

Reason: 3m-8 = -4
3m = -4+8
m = 4/3.

Que-4: If 4x+3 = 15, then 2x-3 = ?
(a) 0       (b) -3       (c) 3         (d) -6

Sol: (c) 3

Reason: 4x+3 = 15
4x = 15-3
x = 12/4 = 3
Put the value of x in (2x-3)
= 2(3)-3
= 6-3
= 3.

Que-5: If (m/3)+2 = 5, then m = ?
(a) 6         (b) 9        (c) 5         (d) 4

Sol: (b) 9

Reason:  (m/3)+2 = 5
m/3 = 5-2
m/3 = 3
m = 3×3
m = 9.

Que-6: If (x/2)+3 = 5-x, then x = ?
(a) 4/3      (b) 3/4       (c) 5/3        (d) 3/5

Sol: (a) 4/3

Reason:  (x/2)+3 = 5-x
(x/2)+x = 5-3
(x+2x)/2 = 2
3x = 4
x = 4/3.

Que-7: If (x/2)-5 = (x/3)-6, then x = ?
(a) -5       (b) -6       (c) 3         (d) -3

Sol: (b) -6

Reason:  (x/2)-5 = (x/3)-6
(x/2)-(x/3) = -6+5
(3x-2x)/6 = -1
x/6 = -1
x = -1×6
x = -6.

Que-8: If (x/3)-(x/4) = 5, then x = ?
(a) 5/12       (b) 12/5         (c) 60          (d) 1/60

Sol: (c) 60

Reason:  (x/3)-(x/4) = 5
(4x-3x)/12 = 5
x = 5×12
x = 60.

Que-9: If 4x-1 = 7, then 3x-2 = ?
(a) 3        (b) 4        (c) 5          (d) 6

Sol: (b) 4

Reason:  4x-1 = 7
4x = 7+1
x = 8/4
x = 2
Put the value of x in (3x-2)
= 3(2)-2
= 6-2
= 4.

Que-10: If (2x/2)-8 = 2-x, then x = ?
(a) 5        (b) 4        (c) 6          (d) 9

Sol: (a) 5

Reason:  (2x/2)-8 = 2-x
(2x/2)+x = 2+8
(2x+2x)/2 = 10
4x = 10×2
x = 20/4
x = 5.
