Pythagoras Theorem
The Pythagoras Theorem states that in a right-angled triangle, the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two side.
Theorem Statement : In a right-angled triangle, the square of the hypotenuse (longest side opposite the 90° angle) equals the sum of the squares of the other two sides (legs).
Converse of Pythagoras Theorem : If the sum of the squares of two sides of a triangle equals the square of the longest side, then the triangle is a right-angled triangle.
Formula : (Hypotenuse)² = Perpendicular² + Base²
AC² = AB² + BC²
Practice Questions on Pythagoras Theorem :- Exercise-10(a)
Important Tips
- Always identify the hypotenuse correctly before applying the formula.
- The converse is crucial for proving a triangle is right-angled.
- For questions involving heights, draw a diagram to identify the right-angled triangle.
- Common Pythagorean triplets like (3,4,5), (5,12,13) and (8,15,17) are useful for rapid calculation.
Practice Questions on Proving :- Exercise-10(b)
