Progress Check-2
Photosynthesis ICSE Class-10 Concise Selina Biology Solutions Chapter-6
Question 1:
Write the overall summary chemical equation of photosynthesis .
Answer :
The process of photosynthesis is commonly written as:
6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6 + 6O2.
This means that the reactants, six carbon dioxide molecules and six water molecules, are converted by light energy captured by chlorophyll (implied by the arrow) into a sugar molecule and six oxygen molecules, the products.
Question 2:
Which single substance in the above equation is repeated in raw material as well as reproduced as an end product ?
Answer :
Water in the above equation of photosynthesis is repeated in raw material as well as reproduced as an end product.
Question 3:
What is the source of oxygen released in photosynthesis CO2 , or H2O ?
Answer :
The above reaction is the photosynthesis reaction in which the carbon dioxide and water in the presence of sunlight converts into the glucose sugar and the oxygen. Hence, the source of oxygen liberated during the process of photosynthesis is water.
Question 4:
What happens in photolysis ?
Answer :
Photolysis, chemical process by which molecules are broken down into smaller units through the absorption of light.
Question 5:
Dark reaction involves utilisation of CO2 in producing C6H12O6 (glucose). Why is this phase called dark reaction ?
Answer :
This phase is called dark reaction because these reactions are independent of light energy i.e., they do not require the presence of light energy.
Question 6:
Glucose produced during photosynthesis is soon polymerised into starch. What does polymerisation mean ?
Answer :
Polymerisation is the process of linking of several glucose molecules to produce a molecule of starch. In plants, glucose is stored in form of starch.
Question 7:
Why is it better to call the dark phase of photosynthesis as light-independent phase”?
Answer :
The dark phase of photosynthesis can be called as light independent phase since it does not require sunlight.

Question 1:
How do the following favour increased photosynthesis?
(i) Large surface area of the leaf.
(ii) Thinness of the leaf.
(iii) More numerous stomata.
Answer :
(i) Large surface area of leaves allows more sunlight to fall on the leaves and thus maximum absorption of light which favours increase rate of photosynthesis.
(ii) If the leaf is thin, then there would be rapid transport as the distance between the cells would be less thus facilitating increased photosynthesis rate.
(iii) Presence of numerous stomata would allow rapid exchange of gases i.e. oxygen is given out and carbon dioxide is taken in, thus increasing photosynthesis rate.
Question 2:
Name the three end-products of photosynthesis and mention the fate of each of them in the plant.
Answer :
The three end products of photosynthesis are carbohydrate, oxygen and water.
The sunlight( photons) are captured by the chlorophyll cells of the plants along with carbon dioxide to perform the process of photosynthesis( produce food for the plant).
The overall reaction of this process is:
6 CO2 + 6 H2O ———> C6H12O6 + 6 O2
light
Simple sugar gets formed by conversion of the solar energy into chemical energy by the plants.
Traces of water is also produced from the oxygen molecules of the carbon dioxide molecule.
Question 3:
If we keep on increasing CO, concentration in the air, will the rate of photosynthesis also keep on increasing in direct proportion ?
Yes/No. Explain
Answer :
NO, if we keep on increasing CO2 concentration in the air, the rate of photosynthesis will not keep on increasing in direct proportion. At first, if carbon dioxide concentration increases, the rate of photosynthesis will increase but up to certain limit then it gets stabilized.

Question 1:
Why is it necessary to destarch the leaves of a plant before performing an experiment on photosynthesis?
Answer :
It is important to destarch a plant before performing any experiment on photosynthesis so that it can be established whether or not a particular factor (carbon dioxide/ light/ water) is important for the photosynthetic reaction.
Question 2:
Why do we perform the iodine test ?
Answer :
We perform iodine test to show the presence of starch.
Question 3:
What chemical do you use to remove CO from inside a flask in certain experiments on photosynthesis ?
Answer :
Potassium Hydroxide (KOH)
Question 4:
All food chains start with a plant. Why is this so ?
Answer :
A food chain always starts with a producer. This is an organism that makes its own food. Most food chains start with a green plant, because plants can make their food by photosynthesis.
Question 5:
The honey bee produces honey. In terms of the food chain, is the honey bee a producer or a consumer ?
Answer :
Honeybee is a consumer because it consumes nectars from the plants. It cannot manufacture its own food like plants.
